Trail run warm up/down 30:00 [2] ***

Did proper warmup for the sprint race. Very nice to have a map of warmup area. Good touch by organizers! Felt a little bit heavy but nevetheless ready for the race. Decided to stay as close as possible to the straight line. By the way, it is FOOLS DAY :)

Orienteering race 16:07 [4] *** 2.9 km (5:33 / km) +100m 4:44 / km
spiked:12/12c

Well, didn't have troubles spiking controls. However, my decision to stay as close to straight as possible was somewhat wrong. Lost about 10 seconds to #2 cutting too early through the green, and about 20 seconds to #8 going straight across the re-entrant with steep uphill where I had to do a small detour to find place to climb up. Should go right of the re-entrant. Ever learning process :) Lost 9 seconds to Clem. Couldn't push speed up much as there was no good traction under foot. No way I could show time below 15 minutes as some Canadians did!

Reminder for myself, need to do more of hill intervals.

Trail run warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Brisk warmup for my anchor relay leg. We have good relay team this time and good chances that Flying Potatoes would win 12 points category!

Orienteering race 41:00 [3] *** 5.1 km (8:02 / km) +235m 6:32 / km
spiked:12/13c

FLYING POTATOES won! Karin, Masha, Edwin, and Sergey are USA Relay champions :)

Made one 2 minute mistake on #10 on the last loop going into the wrong spur. Have to pay more attention! I took it somewhat easy saving for tomorrow. Although, uphills didn't make the task easier :) Race planning by organizers was so nice! It is undoubtedly one of the best relay races I have witnessed in the past years!

Lots of steep uphills and muddy horse trails. At least should give a sense of what to expect tomorrow at the beginning as last half would be through the tearing plains.

Reminder: Have to do more hill intervals!

Trail run 30:00 [2]

Walked Masha to the start. We did a little bit of warming together on the muddy trail. After her start I went into woods and did a little bit of water splashing in numerous pools. It was nice to realize that rain stopped right before my start :)

Orienteering race 37:20 [4] *** 5.4 mi (6:55 / mi) +220m 6:08 / mi
spiked:15/17c

Middle distance course. Lost about three minutes on mistakes. One was at the infamous Pig House! To 3 should go straight instead of right variant. Didn't want to risk? #4 I passed probably 5 meters above but didn's see the flag as was focused on the bottom of re-entrant. Should have read clue sheet more carefully beforehand. Bounced back and read the clue sheet when saw a building in the clearing. Lots of trail crossings :) Couldn't push much speed wise as everything was so slippery. At places had to use my hands to climb uphills as clits would not hold. One step forward, two steps sliding back :) Canadians are hard to beat! Relevant training in group helps a lot. I wonder if East coast runners can form similar training groups.

Reminding myself to do more of hill intervals as most of my speed training is on flat!
