Running race 1:08:53 [4] 14.99 km (4:36 / km) +379m 4:05 / km
ahr:167 max:172 shoes: O-VJ-Grey-Spikes

8th of 344 http://www.pretzelcitysports.com/08%20dirty%20bird...
20 seconds from a top 2% finish. Pretty happy with that result, and was happy I could fight hard the whole way - didn't fade like many others (I was ~25th at 0.3 miles (all paved), 15th at 1/3 point, and 12th a 1/2 point.) Many place changes, where I'd pass, and/or be passed by the same person more than once

Pretty cold (30-something & drizzling), but was comfy in tights & long sleeve top, with ear band coming off early, and gloves going on and off a few times.

Running warm up/down 6:21 [2] 0.9 km (7:03 / km) +10m 6:41 / km
ahr:140 shoes: O-VJ-Grey-Spikes

Too late for a proper warmup, and didn't cool down at all as I was freezing cold. But about halfway home, my legs/knees were feeling crappy, so I stopped for a 3 minute cooldown loop - still freezing, but the legs felt a lot better.

Running warm up/down 9:02 [2] 1.32 km (6:51 / km) +33m 6:05 / km

Orienteering race 40:37 [4] 6.9 km (5:53 / km) +75m 5:35 / km

Outclassed again - about 2-2.5 minutes of mistake on a 20-something control course seemed okay, but then Zhyk, Balter & Sergei G. were cleaner, and faster! I beat Clem, which is always good, but it wasn't that long ago when Clem & I were fighting for 1st, not 4th... :(

Running 23:36 [2] 4.1 km (5:45 / km) +48m 5:26 / km

In the dark after a family outing that took the whole day. Went with my grandfather, aunt, uncle & mom on a walking tour of some downtown Philly sites, incl. a big model train setup at some famous terminal marketplace (which was one of the most crowded places I've ever been on this holiday Friday), then to Macy's Christmas show, then to the liberty bell and independence hall (we'd seen National Treasure on DVD about a week before..)

Running race 18:55 [4] 5.0 km (3:47 / km) +20m 3:43 / km
shoes: R-NB 891's

5k race in NE Devon (2 miles from home) w/about 150 people. I was 3rd. Angelica was 2nd woman. I'm happy with the time, as climb-adjusted it's very close to my fastest ever, and I think it's my 2nd fastest.

My R knee got sore over the next two days, which may be related to road racing (it's happened before.) Not so happy with that. Hope that recovers soon.

Running warm up/down 25:45 [2] 3.51 km (7:20 / km) +20m 7:08 / km

ahr:134 shoes: R-NB 891's

Loop to King of Prussia and back.

Work continues to get more hectic, with my first ever scheduled meeting on a weekend (last Saturday at 5-6pm)... I even checked (work) email tonight for an hour to help out the people who've been working weekends and late nights. My attackpoint and personal email are lagging severely. I've yet to miss a run since Sept. 1 though. Family's not to happy with the work situation though. No meetings have been scheduled for the Thanksgiving break (yet.)

With Angelica, during the day, ran 1x-mile then 2x 1/2 mile - in the mulch & bushes (20%) and mowed grass (80%) next to the trail, where Angelica was running on pavement. It was reasonably balanced with me a bit ahead. Next we may try Angelica on mowed grass/dirt trail, and me in the deep grass, in VF park..

Better run than the last few weeks, on Blue @ Fair Hill. It was a pretty (albeit brisk) day on nice course with some nice long legs (one was ~3km). A few bits of sloppiness here and there, as my focus/flow is still a bit weak.

Not very satisfying to be 6th in a local meet with a reasonable run, but at least that means the local competition can be pretty dense (although all of the top 5 weren't DVOA metro areaa competitors.

VF Park checking out the rapidly disappearing parking lots. E-side Mt. Joy still has ~100 spaces, down from ~130 (bigger) spaces. 5 other nearby lots have been erased, leaving only the sled hill lot available in the west side of the Mt. Joy map. This could make future event parking a little tight...

3x 'mile' at Wilson Park, averaging 5:45. I think that mile was short, esp. the 2nd half which is uphill, which was only taking about 7 seconds longer than the first half downhill (about -14m, then +10m climb per half.)

Avg. GPS 1st half is 806m, which is pretty close to the claimed 0.5 miles, and the time makes sense.
Avg. GPS 2nd half is 790m, which indeed sits a bit on the short side.

With Scott, at night. Tied, ahead & ahead. If I manage to stick with him as he gets back into 16-something 5k pace, that would be nice. Although me being ahead today was definitely aided by his stomach issues...

Very hard to get out to run at night, but the workout is good, so I'll likely stick with this.

I imagine updating my log once a week isn't really conducive to readership. Thanks to those of you hanging in there and pinging me once in a while.

My navigation is sucking these days too. And I'm not enjoying the old maps, or running through green. A bit of a frustrating month.

#4 today was the first clue that something was amiss - this was highish in the reentrant - matching the description well, but my circle was centered on a 3-reentrant junction.

#5 was on a rootstock - on a 10 year old map - which means they picked another rookstock in the area, about 30m NW of the mapped one. As I attacked from the NE, I searched 4 others before finding the right one. Annoying, but still a passing grade for a local event course - and an error that I initially thought might be my own (until others confirmed it was off.)

Then # 6. Nailed the circle center - searched a bit around the deep reentrant, then decided it was probably misplaced, or I was hosed, so I ran up and down the main reentrant, than the N-side, then reattacked from the N, then reattacked from the E (both fields 100m away), then decided to circle looking for the evidence of where the bag was actually placed. Sure enough it was there - placed about 100m or so SSE in a different reentrant.

Then the dilemma. Three weeks ago, Red # 1 was misplaced. I double checked that one, got confirmation from Angelica, untied it (the epunch, punch and bag), and moved it to the right place. Upon telling the course setter/event-director at the end about the corrected placement, I asked (not as politely as was possible, I'm sure) for a few minutes credit for doing all that - I was 3 minutes behind the other Red runners near my speed. I got nothing for that, but finish behind the even older guys on Red...
I'm glad the rest of the runners enjoyed the course, but the lesson learned from that was if I'm nice to the later runners, and help out the course setter by fixing the misplaced bag*, I get screwed with a bad result and ranking.
So this time I left it there (plus I was alone, so had no confirmation.)

I then ran the rest of the course hard hoping the leg to 6 (or maybe to 6 and 7) would be thrown out. Apparently the epunch people don't do that (known controversial) leg deletion thing, so many of us were just offered the SPW option, which I took.

I managed to blow nearly 7 minutes on # 18 later on - all my fault this time - most of that within about 100-200m of the bag. I lost focus on navigation - excuse list: veg. was thick, I'd had a stick in my eye (thin, but 2cm long, wedged under the lower eyelid...) for 30 minutes, and I wasn't confident in the bag hanging accuracy after number 6. But none of those excuses cut it. I just flunked that one. Where did the flow go? Did I burn my last supply of it on the 1st half of the Stumble last Saturday?

*Note that I don't recommend moving bags unless you are (a) a solid navigator, and (b) have confirmation from another solid navigator that it's wrong. And I'd never do it in an A-meet even with 2nd-person confirmation... I was 95% sure this time, but had no other orienteers around to confirm, but the knowledge that I might get-screwed per the above was part of my decision too.

Note

While running the 2nd half of today's course, I was rather fixated on how I was potentially about to be screwed for a 3rd time in the rankings. Today's SPW ensures that today's result doesn't count, so that's down to two - Green Lane with the above mentioned control placement correction, and Mt. Penn, where DNF'ers on the lightning day got an SPW, but I, who layed in a ditch for 15 minutes, and then decided to actually punch the last two controls instead of simply walk it in, got a lousy ranking day - my worst of the year.

I did the math, and to first order, I think if both of those were SPW'ed, I'd only move up about 2 points, possibly passing Balter, but still 3 points behind Clem. As it's thus unlikely to make a difference for the DVOA cup, I think I'll just whine here in the locality of my log. If I have some spectacular results in December, maybe I'll bring this up. Or maybe I should bring it up now, so it's not a correction that puts me ahead of Clem.

Or even better would be for Zhyk to show up to 2 more events, and thus have the 7 events needed for his regular clobbering of both Clem & I earn him the '08 DVOA cup...

Running warm up/down 8:00 [2] 1.1 km (7:16 / km)
shoes: O-VJ Integrator Spikes

Fractured short warmup, and even less cooldown.

Did White with Oriana, who seems to be getting the hang of planning navigation - after I asked "which way to we go", expecting a finger pointing the right way, I got, "let's go down this trail", and when I asked about a different trail that actually went more directly to the control, she said, "no I think we should go down this trail to here, then turn and take this little trail to 1". Which was a fine alternative route choice. Not expecting route choice discussions at this point but that was pretty cool. Her interest in the orienteering lapsed after a bit, and I don't push it too hard. We spent a lot of time picking up leaves, and then cut 3-9, which was just the right time to see AJ run by to the finish.

We got to 9 about 30 seconds after AJ, who'd run right by us on his way to 10 (and ours from 3 to 9). At 9, I suggested Oriana might want to just chase AJ, at which point she pronounced "I don't want to follow" and promptly looked at her map to decide her own route to 10...

Over Mt. Misery and back along the creek with Angelica, who was pushing the pace for much of this. She got hot and tired by the end. She apparently really doesn't like my HR monitor beeping when I'm going below Level 2, as it she feels the need to run hard enough to avoid the beeping on my watch.

Running intervals 1:21:38 intensity: (21:30 @1) + (42:00 @2) + (3:14 @3) + (14:35 @4) + (19 @5) 13.04 km (6:16 / km) +640m 5:02 / km
shoes: O-VJ-Grey-Spikes

1st 15 minutes with AJ - he was wheezing pretty good at 1.4 miles, so we dropped the 1.5 mile goal. Fall allergy/asthma limitations? Maybe.

Then went to do hill intervals. Part of my normal hill climb was being actively paved by steamrollers so I bailed back to a climb up the S-face of Mt. Joy - not as long though, from the crosswalk to the Joy loop trail, then left up to a tree where the loop trail levels out. Was aiming for 8, then 10, then 8-if-I-do-the-last-one-fast and I did it, so it was 8.

Times:
2:04, 2:10, 2:09, 2:08, 2:16, 2:03, 2:05, 1:57
Max HR:
168, 168, 168, 170, 166, 172, 174, 176

HR Evidence suggests I push almost 5BPM harder in a group, so running on Wed. eve. is definitely suggested by my coach...

5x800 in the dark and rain. The Conestoga track lights are still hosed, now turning on at 7pm when it's dark at 5pm...

2:54, 2:50, 2:50, 2:48, 2:46. Not a great session. Scott was out in front on all of these. It turns out he's a recent 16-17 min. 5k'er, who's recovering from injury.

This was the last track workout with this group. Apparently the same group keeps meeting on Wed. 6:30pm, running to a lit park, and doing loops around a 1.3 mile loop with 0.1 mile markers. I'd have to plan intervals of 0.1 mile multiples, and I think only Scott would do them with me (ahead of me...) The place they meet is a 6 minute run from my front door... But it's dark and cold, and I _could_ do intervals alone in the morning, in daylight... Should I join the night group, or run alone in the morning. Hmm.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [2] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: O-VJ Integrator Spikes

Didn't help much, as physically I couldn't push myself much at all - HR zone 4 is my goal for O', but this race was only 20% that high, with even more time spent in zone 2 than 4..

Orienteering race 1:18:18 intensity: (1:00 @1) + (29:00 @2) + (33:00 @3) + (15:18 @4) 10.12 km (7:44 / km) +299m 6:44 / km
ahr:151 max:171 shoes: O-VJ Integrator Spikes

Not a fun run a French Creek East. Nothing really terrible, but the repeated nav. failures, plus the vegetation being (a) seriously out of date and (b) much greener than mapped, wasn't pleasant. A map revision would be worthwhile here.

Lost 4 minutes on number 2 - GPS shows I went really close to each of the 5 platforms I was planning to attack my way in - but I only saw 1st one in the terrain. Not sure why I couldn't find platforms with 100m attacks... Felt worse than 4 minutes - route shows 6 separate zigs to look then hestitate (from a wrong nearby platform I hit first) before I saw the bag. Apparently I was on the line in, but was pushed around unmapped veg. just before the bag, which kicked off the whole missed-the-bag thing.

Lost 3 minutes enroute to 4, again pushed around unmapped vegetation that I didn't fight through enough to hold my line. Then lost another minute on the attack on an awful green-ish hillside with several cliffs (that was also originally mapped as mostly white)

Lost 2 minutes on 5, aiming for the left side of a hilltop, but apparently that rough direction was too vague, and trying to read rocks along the way worked for Corrine.

Lost 1 minute going through awful vegetation out of 5 (didn't trust the veg. at all, but apparently here, going around the veg. was worth it), then nailed a hunters stand, but missed a platform 120m away, and attacked from a bit too far along that pre-attack, missing the bag about 50m high (according to GPS) where the visibility was much worse than that from up high - and much better from below apparently. Amazingly losing only 2.5 more minutes here.

Lost 0.5 minutes enroute to 7 drifting off my bearing more than needed, but finally nailed a bag (sighting trees from a trail bend.)

Another 0.5 min. hesitation near 8, but not too bad considering how the day was going. Plus another few seconds near 9 which appeared to be too high/too-the-right compared to the attack (map?), plus the circle was definitely on the wrong boulder (description said 'northern' boulder, which is plausible - but map circle was centered the southern of 3 nearby boulders).

14 minutes or so lost here. Yuck.

Event: DVOA Myrick

Running warm up/down 3:00 [2] 0.3 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: O-VJ Integrator Spikes

Poor warmup topped off a morning where I didn't prep. well. Race started at noon and pre-race nutrition consisted of a McDonald's Big Breakfast (complete with Eggs and Sausage patty), plus one soda and one OJ (as I sat in back with the kids for the whole drive, I was distracted from hydrating too.)

Orienteering race 2:06:44 intensity: (29 @1) + (13:22 @2) + (48:12 @3) + (1:04:41 @4) 16.87 km (7:31 / km) +620m 6:21 / km
ahr:159 max:173 shoes: O-VJ Integrator Spikes

Had a good 1st loop, then hit a wall physically and mentally. In the first loop I had 2-minute error - still not sure what's up with the trail bend I saw there, and one iffy choice in a window, but otherwise ran solidly finish 3rd (on the 1st loop) with 1-3 minutes of Eddie & Jon T., and pulling away from Greg B., Ken W., and Andis(?).

But then I started feeling my breakfast come back, and took a poor window-route to which I added 5 minutes of mistakes on 2 controls. I had apparently dropped back to 6th at that point. On the 2nd looop I was alone ex. for one loop-sighting of Jon T.. After that window, the rest of course had okay nav, but was very slow - stayed 6th.

Gotta eat & drink better, esp. when running something this long, and get my nav. focus on better (e.g. intermediate AP's and sighting trees) in the long-attacks in vague terrain.
