Orienteering race 20:33 [4] 2.2 km (9:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

A fun sprint at Mendon Ponds. not a whole lot of route choice, though; usually the fastest route was on the red line.

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 2.1 km (21:26 / km)
shoes: Inov8 - Xtalon 212

Circle-O training exercise. Navigating on a circular map without north lines and with trails removed. Although it was a sunny day, I didn't use the sun (consciously) much and really tried to practice reading contours. About half of the controls were pretty easy, but the terrain was relatively complex, and some were quite tricky. All in all, it was a great training exercise
9 PM

Orienteering race 1:00:00 [4] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Night-O at Mendon Ponds. The mass start night score format has to be about as fun as it gets. I made a few mistakes but mostly did fine

Orienteering race 2:48:00 [4] 8.4 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: MudRock IV

Day 2 of the US Champs. I foolishly hoped that the second day would be easier than the first--it was much tougher. the terrain was even more detailed (and on a 1:15000 map to boot) and the control placement was extremely challenging. I ran very well, spiking controls 1-5. Unfortunately, controls 6 and 7 were missing, and I wasted a lot of time looking before I called off the search. I was a bit dejected thereafter, and was pretty tired and slow. Made one of the dumbest errors ever when I spiked #9 but stupidly checked it against the control code for #10. I wasted 8 minutes before I realized that I actually was on #9.

Orienteering race 2:20:03 [4] 8.7 km (16:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8-MudrockIII

Day 1 of the US Champs. Ran okay on some very challenging terrain. Having a calf problem probably helped slow me down enough to stay in better contact with the map.

Orienteering race 26:30 [2] *** 2.9 km (9:08 / km)
spiked:17/17c shoes: MudRock IV

Ran very slow and easy, trying to ease my calf back into action. The pace and my familiarity with Western made the navigation pretty trivial -- I stick by my route choices, and don't think that I made any mistakes. I just basically jogged the course. My calf did not appreciate having to work like it did, though, and it's looking most likely that my races this weekend will be seriously hampered by it.

Excellent use of open woods in the course design-- some of the woods were actually more open than mapped! It was a pleasure to run this course -- nice job Mike!
