Orienteer (NAOC 2012 Middle) 1:16:00 [3]
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Ok, let's see what happened.
Well, very messy to 1, wavered between staying higher to avoid the green stuff and staying lower to try to find the reentrant. Ended up running into Robin.... she had started 4 minutes earlier. Should have looked at her map (orange) but I wouldn't have been any help 'cause all I could have told her was "somewhere around Here" but maybe that would have been helpful.
Anyway, found 1, then became more careful and slow, maybe for the rest of the route. Hate that trade-off. Fast or accurate, seldom both for me.
Overshot 5, used the catching cliffs.
Good through 10, but then on 11 didn't notice that the reentrants didn't really present themselves at the bottom of the hill; went right to avoid the junk (should have gone through the light green section.... and then was off by two re-entrants. Found some stone walls and said. "Oh. That's not good".
14 was just oddly tricky for such an easy leg.
Rest okay, but too much time wasted all in all.
Then waited around for a really, really long time for Robin. Ty was already in from White and playing with a pack of similar aged kids.
Robin took a while; she did a number of good controls but then lost her compass and wisely found the safety escape and came back.
Rain was hardly noticeable while running.... why is that? and mostly stopped so there was at least some social time at the end.
Loved the arena area, very very busy and festive and so many new faces and multiple languages. Quite the international event, and fun to see Sandy strolling around with everything so well under control.

Orienteer (Blue Mountain Map 7) 2:45:00 [3]
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

I'll get into the races at some later date, once I have time again (in San Jose now), and once I've had a chance to digest. On the face of it, they looked pretty dismal... but strangely I feel okay about lots of pieces. Feels somewhat like a roller-coaster relationship that I'm having with this sport..... although if it were a relationship, I'd say "what the heck is going on here?". Yep, same.
I noticed on the plane rides, looking at my maps w glasses AND contact lens, that I saw lots of features I totally missed with just my contact lens. Could that be part of the issue or is that just hopeful thinking?

OK... back to Blue Mountain training. It was raining, I had chest cold, determined to get some skills before the NAOC meet. At least there were tapes this time, so I did get the thrill of seeing them when I was successful. The terrain was a bit tricky with plenty of rocks, funny rolling areas at times. Made me very careful. After a couple of hours, and not nearly through the course.... I called it quits and headed back to Newark. Great to be spending time with both my sisters.

Orienteer (Central park) 1:00:00 [3]

Walked some of the controls w both my sisters and Ty. Andrea only had time for three- then the rest of us had NY pizza and went back out for another seven or so. Spent next few hours out and about; had some appts to keep for Robin but there were so many distractions of the food and shopping types that we ended up jogging quite a bit to stay on schedule.
