Orienteer race (Night O) 58:00 [3] 4.4 km (13:11 / km)
shoes: Asics2

This one got into a bit more of the Orange territory.
I started out chasing the pack of runners, in the rear. The last of the runners.
Didn't pay much attention to my map until I punched the first control; in mass start I just am better off being carried along by the wave for 2-3 controls, but definitely wanted to start getting my bearings and getting used to the map.
Was alone from mid-way through 3, almost to the end. By alone, I mean "in my head" and "in my planning". Definitely I ran into people every now and then, most notably Jim Mullin who seems to pop into a lot of my controls. But the planning and most of the routes were peaceful, dark, fun and even made sense. Lots of areas to run with nice (non trail) hand-rails--and as a counterbalance--lots of really crappy prickly bushes with long arms and sharp fingernails, bloody legs when I got home.
I remember at one point (to 8?) when I was crawling UP to the marsh, and thinking... hmmm, I'm climbing uP to a marsh, there's lots of brush and it looks clear on my map..... and sure enough it was a top of the hill marsh, and I recalled Mike's comments that we would need long sleeves and vegetation was mismarked.... but I was off by 100 meters (but knew enough to figure I might be and corrected fairly easily.)
NOTE TO SELF: I have got to learn to tape my laces; even with 4 knots, they came loose. How does that happen? Now I know how Houdini escaped, just ran through an orienteering course in chains. Easy.

Run (Lake elmo) 1:00:12 [3] 5.91 mi (10:11 / mi)
shoes: Asics2

Lake Elmo w Chris. Negative splits, not due to planning but due to coooold weather and shorts. Felt good with bright sunlight falling underneath the storm clouds to create stark yet irradiant landscapes.

Run (River Road) 30:00 [3] 3.1 mi (9:41 / mi)
shoes: Asics2

w Robin.
I meant to do the whole loop, but after 1/4 mile, I said, "I don't feel like running today" and she said, "Ok, let's just run the River Road."
So we did.

Orienteer (ASP - Seeker training) 1:20:00 [3] 4.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics2

Set 7 controls on the snowshoe loop for the "Seekers".... group of pre-teen boys who are now super into orienteering. We've done a few trainings, and also a couple of races and they are really loving it.
Challenge for me is to set easy-ish but very adventurous courses, so I make sure we go down steep hills, do some fun climbing on rocks, etc.
The kids were all Really Excited this week to get to meet Andrei.... who is their other coach. Robin also joined in for the training and ran the course.
Andrei gave them all pre-terrain training on the map, compass, and then helped them along the way and of course they think he is super cool and talked about him in the car on the way to Dairy Queen (Andrei had to get over to the Alley Cat race... they also liked that a lot).
Kids didn't get too lost; controls were probably set to a local Orange level.
Very fun easy day out in the fall woods.
Oh... and we ran into Pete Curtis, which was really nice, because when I was wondering WHERE everyone was.... and started running up the snowshoe path to find them all.... it turned out that Pete had already seen every one of them so I knew they were at least accounted for. Thanks Pete. And SUPER SWEET thanks to Space Monkey.

Orienteer race (Chester Woods Red) 1:10:45 [3] 7.0 km (10:06 / km)
shoes: Icebug Acceleritas-L

Second time racing at Chester Woods; I opted to run red instead of the Minnegoat due to multiple time constraints bearing down on me this weekend....
Course was 7k with 10 controls, all of them fairly easy. I think probably the most effort was given to setting the Goat (fair enough) with the assumption that most of last years' Red runners would be running that (true).
As a result, many of the controls were repeats of last year's controls and that was a bit of a disappointment... and a good bit of the run was on trails. On the bright side of that, I knew some things to avoid and also knew what the vegetation would be like and I knew I had to just keep pumping so I didn't really allow myself to rest and planned prior to reaching controls.

I've been encouraging Robin to FINALLY write in her log (Aunt Doggie), but since she may not comply, I'll point out for her that this was her first Advanced course (Brown), and that her older-but-not-oldest sister absolutely SLAMMED her on the only common control, where it can be seen that Linear Ice ran in under 4 minutes, and Aunt Doggie took almost 30 minutes. Split 3-4
