Orienteering race 18:02 [5]
shoes: inov8 X-talon 2012

NOL sprint.

The first sprint to beat me in a long time! Straight into the tricky stuff and my lack of orienteering took it's toll. Fine for the first 6 controls but by then my brain was running 30m behind my legs which was just asking for disaster on this map!

3x40s blow outs, pretty out of character, 1 bad route choice and plenty of <10s mistakes. Not happy with my race and didn't expect to be anywhere near the top of the field, so was very surprised to end up in 3rd.
Almost 2mins behind Rachel though, which is a shocking time difference for a sprint!

Very well set courses, disappointed I didn't handle the course well.
Plenty of room for improvement! :)

On the plus side, I had the fastest finish split :)

Orienteering 32:13 [5]

NOL middle.

A scrappy race in scrappy forest. Very small features which took a few controls to get used to. (our 2nd control was in a ditch behind an earth wall - yet the flag was visible above the earth wall!)

Had a good start, bit of a slump in the middle, and good surge at the end (story of my weekend really). Stopped short on 10, dropping 20s, and never actually saw the tower that teh control was on! Then lacked confidence at 11 and wavered too far right, another 20s. Long leg to 12 I did really well for the first 2/3rds, laying down my bearing and smashing it out. But then decided to cut the corner to the small track, but never rejoined it! 40s time loss bashing through the green and having to attack the control from the opposite side.

Only other time loss was on 15, another 30-40s where I somehow went within 10m of the control without seeing it! Silly stuff really.

Anyway, clean enough in a tough area to take the win, and an enjoyable course all up. (apart from the 240m marginally uphill finish chute!)

biking (commute) 35:00 [3]

to and from uni
6 PM

Running 22:00 [3]

Ease out of the legs with Devil after the drive up to Newcastle. Only had one Ute try and run us down. It literally stopped, revved, and shot off towards us...well I may be exaggerating. But only just!

Flipping warm for 6pm. Felt a bit like Rome to be running in the dark in tshirt and short and sweating like anything!

Note

Was going to go do some short sharp 30:30s at lunchtime on blackie...but there's smoke everywhere and I don't really feel like burning.
So going for the square wave taper this week ;)

Strength and Conditioning 20:00 [1]

:D
7 PM

Football 1:30:00 [2]

spent half an hour messing around doing corners before we actually started training...
ave. as.

On the bright side I've found the ultimate pre-training food....peanut butter, banana and chocolate (proper, not choc spread) sandwich! Sugar high lasted about 3/4 of training...obviously need more next time.

Note

Is it legit to have a real taper week when you haven't really been in training?

Another average as day at uni. Got the tyres on the car done atleast. And got John to figure out the puzzle of putting a new windscreen wiper together for me after I struggled for half an hour this morning - the supplied instructions were blatantly wrong and clearly I've lost my powers of imagination (all used up on lego 10+years ago).

Had to walk across town twice to drop/pick up the car. And lo and behold, outside of my heel now hurts :( fricken aye.
8 AM

Strength and Conditioning 21:00 [1]

been getting slack again. Mainly cos I got in the routine of doing it in the morning before work, but now it's so cold in the morning...and so warm in bed!

6 PM

Running 40:00 [3]

Map and Pide night at Devil's. Arrived a bit late, or on time, not sure. But others were waiting, so I didn't tape my freshly healed blisters...dumb

So piked about half way round so i wouldn't mess up my feet too bad. Not too much damage, but a baby blister inside the old one on my left foot and right foot a bit tender. Should be sweet by the weekend so long as i'm not an idiot on them (again).

Kept at an honest pace by shep and devil, pretty glad to turn around and cruise back with GrantM!

Didn't stretch last night...

Actually feeling pretty good. But didn't sleep too well due to all the thorns and scratches :s

biking (commute) 40:00 [2]

good to ease out the legs. A little brisk in the morning now...

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Bold 2011

Warm up straight up the hill to the top of the map. For some reason i ran the whole way...

Orienteering 1:17:30 [4]

Some days I love this sport, like yesterday. Others I find myself wondering why I do it, like parts of today.
Got a sign of things to come in the first 20m from the start - thick spiky undergrowth! Managed 1 and 2 OK, then slow to 3 making sure I read off features along the way.
...then 4. Decided to guts it up the hill and bounce off the hill top/track then back into the control...bad idea. So many rocks! and in thick scrubby stuff. Checked sooo many rocks, then eventually popped out to the clearing below the control, which I'd purposefully avoided cos I didn't trust the mapping of the clearings. And sure enough, the clearing was double the size as on the map, and the control was calmly hanging out on the edge of it! So dropped 5 mins on the control compared to those who went straight to the clearing first up.
Let no.4 piss me off and as a result made a mess of my route to 6, going straight over the hill rather than around as I planned. Good sign of my fitness that I got to the top without noticing that's what I was doing i spose? Dropped another 3mins on Grace here, so 8 minutes down and just having a shite time of it really.

Decided to start afresh from 6, and got 7 cleanly while planning my long leg to 8...up and over the saddle and down the long, admittedly green striped, reentrant (sorry, gully). Mmm. Yeah. Got competely stuck in green, over head high, spiky, scrub. Emerged 10mins later, hating life.
Lucky for the sake of all who shared my company later in the day, the course then got a lot more runnable and I could turn on a bit of actual running speed. Clean enough through to the last few controls then.
3rd to last control refused to beep at me (i'd been turning all the controls on, but this one took aaaaages). So I clipped my map, then tried again - and it beeped straight away! Garr! Exited the wrong way, dropping 30s on the next control.

And then my master stroke on a brilliant day - followed the tapes from the last control, only to find myself at the penultimate control of the blue course...neat little 180 mistake, lucky it wasn't in view of anyone! So my finish split is 6xlonger than anyone elses...

Crap race from me, and area far more overgrown than mapped. But everyone had to deal with the same thing.

And now my body is covered in 1000 scratches and spotted with 100 thorns. Which drew plenty of comments at soccer
1 PM

Football 20:00 [3]

Felt surprisingly good during the warmup!

Football 1:30:00 [4]

vs Woden who won the pre-season comp and are one of the top two teams in the league (off last year's form...)

Another even match. 0-0 at the half and we completely dominated the first 25mins of the 2nd half, going 1-0 up and should have been more (say that every week though). And then they played a long ball and a striker beat the offside flag... completely against the run of play :(

Finished 1-1 but so frustrating that we didn't win! A good sign that the team is more annoyed that we didn't win, rather than being satisfied with still being unbeaten this season. We're starting to expect more of ourselves
