Orienteering (Aus WOC trials long) 1:25:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

so average.

Not sure what the problem was entirely, whether I was stuffed from yesterday or if it was starting first. I just never got into race mode. I feel as though I completed the course, but wasn't really part of the competition. Went out first and with no real pressure from behind I found myself losing motivation half way through the long legs. No excuse though, as someone always has to start first and there's every chance I'll have to do it at WOC. So need to sort that one out.

Anyway, yeah just meandered on the long legs. Was very careful around the circle (possibly too careful, lost a fair amount on no.3 cos i pretty much walked it and it wasnt that hard in the end!). Only navigational mistake was at 8 when i got really stuck in the marsh vegetation, then disoriented when i got out. Any other time loss was route choice and motivation.

Managed to put my foot down a hole at the last control too, just to cap off my day :)

Orienteering race (Aus WOC trials sprint) 15:45 [5]
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

nice clean run. only mistake was where the white edging of the no.11 cut through an unpassable wall, so i ran into a dead end thinking there was a gap. 10s gone there. and a less than optimal route choice to 16.
Otherwise was reading ahead well, need to work on figuring out the control circle detail on the run, so i dont have to slow down or get surprised if things don't quite fit what i was expecting.

WU/WD.
right shoe choice given how slippery things were.

Orienteering (Aus WOC trials middle) 34:53 [4]
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

2nd to last start. everyone was saying how i'd feel at home on this map, but i dont think ive run on many nz maps that muddy before!
picked up the map, figured out direction to no.1, dipped into and out of start triangle, looked at map again...couldn't read a thing cos it was covered in mud!
Didn't execute no.1 well at all which really knocked my already low middle dist. confidence. got stuck in a marsh (surprise), and eventually got out of it just to see jimbo trotting along a nice track going around it 10m away!

Anywho. timeloss on 1 and 10 where i was unsure and hesitant. 17 on direction. And then lost a clear 2nd place (was still 1min behind vanessa) on the last control when i made a classic parallel error and lost 90s in the wrong marsh. rookie.

So all up a lot better than nationals (anything would be almost). but still a fair way to go on my middle dist. technique. Need to work on keeping concentration through the last 5-10mins of the race.

pathetic WU and no WD. Too busy cleaning up all the blood on my hand from some innocuous cut i picked up 1/3 of the way around. Really affected my punching technique!

easy run to test the legs up on blackie. quad started aching after 15mins but don't think I'll notice it once i have a map to concentrate on at the weekend.

easy WNT out at stromlo. Led by bun who took us up the steepest option at every junction, and then abandoned us to chase kangaroos...

nah was good. Got used to the thudding ache of my dead leg eventually. Iced it after and good news is it is much much better today (thurs). So will hold off on it today and hopefully be all g by the weekend :)

Note

went and saw the dr again today, who said that my antibiotics werent strong enough. So now i have a double dose for next couple of days, then just the single, stronger dose.
This could wipe me out of training for a couple of days though given how crap i felt when i started my current, weaker antibiotics! fun times.

easy run on little black.
I'm very aware that I find something diff to complain about each session, as much as i hate to. But all day my left quad felt like someone had corked it! so painful! tried to ease it out on the run, but bit of a fail. see how things go tomorrow. ankle and achilles fine in comparison, can still feel achiles a bit though.

Also, another complaint: why are the gates to the botanic gardens only open 9-4.30 on weekdays?! what about those of us who run out of work hours, or at the weekend? I have no motivation to do a dead end run, in and out of the main entrance. So don't be surprised if you're running around the botanics one day and find me caught on top of the barbed wire fence!
