Pawtuckaway NRE, M75, Brown Y, 2.2 km. Two goals -- no falls and go to all the controls. Succeeded on both. :-)

And a really nice day. Drove up and back with Charlie, a pleasure. Lots of social time, a joy. Jeff and Judy, Alar and Eva, Jim A, Lex (and a big hug), Ali, Tom, Silvia, and Martin, Tony F, Glen and Janet, Clint, Jim H, the other Peter G, Ernst, Hans, Nadia, Phil of course, who am I missing? Many asked about Gail, will have to entice her to come at some future event.

And the orienteering? Felt like I had forgotten how. Things not making sense, the contours not popping out at me the way I remember them doing. Lack of practice or diminishing brain, not sure, could be either, or both. On the way to #2, and then again going to #6, I had no idea where I was. On the former I slowly figured it out, ditto on the latter but only after climbing an extra hill.

We'll see. Successfully managing today (note that there were no goals to do with going fast or going accurately) means I am good to try at least once more. Huntington next Sunday if the weather is good. And perhaps a little bit will come back to me about how to do this.

Regardless, today was still excellent.

With Gail, to Hatfield. I guess what counts for an easy pace these days.

Once around the loop trail at Mount Warner. Actually rather satisfying -- the effort was about right, it was nice to revisit a trail I hadn't been on for a while, no problems (falls, things hurting), and I managed a pace that was a pleasant surprise. Mighty fine.

Likely will go to Pawtuckaway on Saturday, as the weather forecast seems favorable, but I'll see how I feel that morning. Signed up for the M75, Brown-Y. Found out since then that it is 2.2 km. My initial reaction was to switch to Brown-X, 3.8 km, but as I thought about it a bit, it seemed that Brown-Y should be just about right. Maybe 30-35 minutes? OK, so maybe a little too long for where I'm at right now. But I certainly don't need the more than an hour Brown-X would take. I'll try to do it without hurting anything, and if I skip a control or just plain can't find one, well, that's just the new normal. :-)

Anyway, really enjoyed the social part of the Corn Maze Champs, and Pawtuckaway offers the possibility of more of the same.

With Gail and Walter, airport loop to the north. Lots of chit-chat for a few miles, and then sporadic chit-chat for a while, and then none at all for the last few miles as the pace picked up. Certainly aware of the effort over the last few bumps.

Note

Interesting article in the NY Times about beavers (and learning to love them instead of hate them).

I had fun watching one a couple of days ago. Usually all I see is something like this (and most often just the bit of the head) --

But this one obviously was hungry and the buffet table was set up right below me. Best look I ever had. Certainly didn't realize how large they are, body about 3' long, tail another foot.

Trails on North Sugarloaf (mostly single-track), inner loop clockwise. Almost all my concentration was on roots/rocks and avoiding them.

Had been raining, more starting as I was finishing.
