Back roads in Montague, some ups and downs. Had an inch or two of slop yesterday, and it's frozen, but the roads were clear, also empty, saw one walker and one car. Mighty fine.

hike with Gail 30:20 [1] 1.42 mi (21:24 / mi) +18ft 21:08 / mi

Old Greenfield Road, carefully.

Real nice outing with Phil, did a loop on old woods roads in Leverett, included the top of Brushy Mountain. A little bit of ice but never enough to be a problem, ditto with the wet areas. Walked any uphill with more than a slight grade, ran the rest, felt fine.

Missed one turn, blind leading the blind (Phil assumed I was paying attention, which I wasn't, so he didn't pay attention either), but recovered nicely. Winter is returning this evening, so good to get this in before the bare ground disappears for a while.

With Gail, north along the river. A little hillier that way than going south. Pretty benign out for January 1, about 35, minimal wind, and dry bare pavement. Didn't see any reason to wash the bikes afterwards, even though I am quite into that now.

A nice pace and good company for the second traing of both the day and the year. Keep this up for the year and I'd put up some awesome numbers, along with some awesome medical bills to deal with both the physical and mental trauma. So I'm expecting it to be a one-day streak. The best kind. Though I do have one really long streak going, waking up every morning. But even that has a couple of gaps.

Note

Highlights of the year:

• Didn't get sick, nor did Gail.
• Went orienteering 17 times.
• Did some running on another 94 occasions.
• Morale stayed good.
• Got a lot of satisfaction from my involvement in local government.
• Took a lot of photos I like.
• Spent way more time talking to my brother than ever before.

Complaints? Nothing, really.

12 PM

biking - dark blue bike 50:21 intensity: (48 @1) + (32:27 @2) + (17:06 @3) 12.14 mi (4:09 / mi) +124ft 4:06 / mi

North along the river a little ways. 40, NW wind, overcast, not too bad except it all felt like hard work. Must be the fact that the air is thicker when it gets cold.

First part of the Mt. Toby jeep trail. Just the right amount.

1 PM

South of town. 34, more wind from the south than expected, just felt cold. Did a tour of some housing developments, which improved morale.

Note

I put my routes for yesterday on RouteGadget -- Ansonia, Osbornedale.

2 PM

biking - dark blue bike 1:27:11 intensity: (2:26 @1) + (1:22:15 @2) + (2:30 @3) 18.66 mi (4:40 / mi) +496ft 4:33 / mi

With Walter. He had his e-bike but never needed to use the e part, as I had tired legs and in no hurray at all. Good conversation, so it all seemed to go by rather quickly.

About 40, bits of sun, breeze from the south, dry roads. It seemed reasonable to assume that any salt that had been on the roads was now elsewhere, along with most of the sand (thank you, rain), so for the first time in several outings the bike did not get a wash. I felt a bit negligent.
