orienteering race 1:35:06 [4] 15.7 km (6:03 / km)
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Last day in Florida, classic distance. A really fine run, errors less than a minute, good physical effort all the way.

Got a break with the weather -- rain overnight to pack down the sand a little, then cool (upper 50s?) and windy when running. Tried to pace myself properly, felt good for about 75 minutes, then struggling a bit for the last 20 but hanging in there. It helped that I caught up to Jeremy Colgan with about 15 minutes to go, kept me moving better. Left hip flexer started complaining at about 65 minutes, sore afterwards, but not terrible.

Best was Eric, a few seconds ahead of Waddington, both about 82 1/2, then James 89, William 90. Not sure who else was ahead of me; I just nosed out several guys (Magnus, Tom, Randy, Greg) who obviously missed some. Really pleased with the result.

Late leaving for the start so I had to run a bunch. Clearly didn't hurt.

orienteering race 35:20 [4] 6.2 km (5:42 / km)
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

WRE event in Florida. Similar to yesterday though a little more green on maybe a quarter of the course. Another real good run, maybe 30-40 seconds missed, most on one control where I was off line leaving and spent a little time correcting my line (and double-checking that I had it right). Ran as hard as I could, felt like a running race in the sense of counting down the miles/kilometers -- I started struggling with the pace after about 20 minutes, more so after 25 or 30, and had to keep telling myself, just hang in there for another 15/10/5 minutes. Very pleased with the result -- Waddington was best with 29:38, next were Eric and James, both 32+, so 35+ was very respectable. It's reward time for doing good training and getting the valueof the G to a multi-year low.

16 km tomorrow. Sure as hell is going to be at a lot slower pace, plus Vlad is promising to introduce us to all the nasty vegetation that we've been avoiding yesterday and today. But the weekend already qualifies as a success.

Same experience warming up as yesterday, felt very sluggish for the first couple of minutes, then progressively better.

orienteering race 16:10 [4] 2.9 km (5:34 / km)
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Sprint at the Florida A mmet. Good run, good effort.

Up at 3:30 am to get to Boston to catch a plane to Orlando. Didn't think we'd make our starts -- we could have started late, but it's both more fun and also an advantage to have folks starting just before and after. Got to the meet site with 20 minutes to spare, a fast change, enough warm-up and then time to go.

Orienteering was easy -- very good visibility, subtle but good contours, the "woods" (sparse trees, a variety of not bad ground vegetation all on a very sandy soil) were fast. So the idea was to run as fast and as straight as possible.

This may have been the first time I've ever beaten my age (age vs. minutes per 10 km), certainly a while since my kilometer time had started with a 5.

Warm-up. First couple minutes felt terrible, but then the heart got going and I felt a lot better.

trail running 54:55 [3]
weight:136.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails, relaxed pace. Felt not so good the first half, depleted, as if my blood sugar was low, then no problem the second half.

Nothing tomorrow, then orienteering for the wekend. The plan is to focus on good orienteering, let the running take care of itself. We'll see.

trail running 1:03:42 [3]
weight:137lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Back on Greenfield ridge, different selection of trails than usual, a bit more hills. Legs felt a little sluggish.

More dogs and their owners out due to the holiday I suppose. All well-behaved, which is not usually the case.
