NOL Sprint B Final - UNSW Course: M21E 3.8 km 64 m

A race to remember. This was truly the jewel in the Sydney Madi Gras Orienteering weekend. This had everything you'd want in a sprint - fast paced terrain, complex navigation, excellent route choice options and a strong depth of competition. The campus was pretty unique too with plenty of things to try and distract even the most focussed orienteer. I probably only made a couple of poorer route choices, particualry # 13 where i went out to the road, rather than to the tunnel. And the long leg to 15, where i failed to spot the nice entrance from the road back into the campus which led me to take the very stair-y option down the middle of the map. After the debacle that was the qualifier, i was very pleased to be leaving Sydney feeling like i was challenged and that i enjoyed a race. Still not the fastest, but for me i though i did alright.
Watching the end of the A final was pretty exciting, made me want to try and get faster. Then i thought "bugger that." I think i may bow out of elite competition without ever making a top 10 in a race. I'll leave that to those who give a stuff about training. From now on AS or A LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG for me. Somewhere where i can feel like i can compare splits with the other competitors.

Good fun race, ran 3rd leg. Didn't make any particular errors, but legs were very leadened from very little running of late.

NOL Sprint Qualifier - Sir Joseph Banks Park

Started out fine, then i was passed by Eric M was running the opposite direction and told me that he had the wrong map, i laughed and kept going to my first control. That's when i found out that I too had the wrong map..... Not overly impressed. I decided that despite what map i was given i would've only qualified for the B final so i kept on going at a nicer pace. After the sand dune loop i stopped into the start to have a general whinge and to let them know that they gave me the wrong map. It wasn't the starters fault. The sticker on the map had my name on it, with the correct class, gender and heat. But the opposing side (you know the side with all the pretty lines) had WOMENS HEAT B on it. You'd really think that someone would have checked this? Perhaps a controller? Am i wrong? Pretty rudimentry mistake and left me with the ongoing impression that NSW orienteering still has trouble with the simpler tasks in the sport. Harking back to the memory of THAT Belangalo Forest NOL race......
It's events like this that i wish i could take to consumer affairs and get my money back.
Anyway, anger aside, i kept on pootling around the womens heat B course and trying to enjoy it. What i really enjoyed was the Jaffa Cake at the finish. It was $5 for a slice, but it was sprinkled with a whole box of Jaffas.
