Big 5 O Week Day 5. Limpopo University. M50. 2.7km 20m. 1st.

Hot again (25C), but early starts, so not too bad. A nice uni campus with some elements of complexity (canopies, dead ends, parallel buildings, etc).

Having been running as fast as the other M50s in the forest, I was confident I could win the Sprint. Unfortunately I couldn't win overall, as Jens the Norwegian has already done enough in the forest. However, my 2nd overall would be at risk if I messed up the Sprint, so I took care at punching and code checking.

Pushed hard on the easy sections but took it easy on the tricky stuff, and won by 20 secs from Charlie. Jens was a long way down, so in the end I nearly caught him overall.

A very wet day, and cooler, about 20C. Felt quite like orienteering in the Forest of Dean.

Found the flags OK, though hesitant at times, and possibly a couple of route choice errors. Finally beat Jens and Charlie, but today Dave had a good run, and so I still didn't get a win.

Big 5 O Week Day 3. Iron Crown. M50. 3.7km 170m. 4th.

Another hot day, but cooler at altitude (20-25C). This was perhaps the highest orienteering I've ever done (2000m).

Annoying miss at #7 where I found an end of a thicket, but apparently there was another end only about a further 10m West from where I was. Looked around in other bits of thicket further East for about 3 minutes before coming back to almost where I started and finding the flag. Grrrr.

A long was down on Jens and Charlie, so this isn't a great points scoring day. Heather beat me by 7 secs, but Jenny and Claire didn't.

Nice walk to the top of Iron Crown afterwards.

Started wet but dried up, 25C. Steep forest at altitude, so hard work.

Reasonable run, with my only mistakes being in the circles, and possibly a poor route choice on #15-#16 near the end. Again, I could have won. Still, only a few seconds down, so it'll be a good points score. Beat all the W35s today.

Big 5 O Week Day 1. Turfloop. M50. 5.9km 70m. 3rd.

Hot (30C) and bushy terrain, with one giraffe and several wildebeest.

Quite tricky. Took it steady but had a slight miss at #4 (30 secs) and then a poor attackpoint at #5, meaning I looked in the wrong bushes for 3 minutes. Grrr. Should have won, but not too bad as a first run of the week.
