Orienteering race 33:14 [3] 4.56 km (7:17 / km) +195m 6:00 / km

British Relays, Summer House Knott. M50 relay, 1st.

Leg 1, so a head-to-head race with Clive H and Nigel B, among others. Had the same gaffling as Clive until #9, and we were together sharing the lead until #7 where he started to pull away. Went through the spectator control only about 1 min down, but lost a bit of time (and was being careful) on #11 and #12, so back in 2nd place on M50, about 3 mins down.

Tim got us back to the front on leg 2, though the SYO B team was closing on us thanks to Bill, but Charlie ran a good 3rd leg to get us the win, several minutes clear.

Orienteering race 1:23:17 [3] 10.65 km (7:49 / km) +336m 6:45 / km

British Champs, High Dam. M50. 6th.

Not a terrible run, but certainly not a great one. Well off the pace due to a long series of small mistakes, a bad route choice, and general tiredness.

#2 90 secs lost, partly through not running straight enough, and also being uncertain how far down the hill to go
#3 60 secs lost. Didn't know where I was after the stream. Relocated on knolls on the north edge of the circle.
#4 75 secs lost, again not knowing exactly where I was approaching the control.
#5 20 secs lost, not being sure which wall I was following. Got lucky and fell into the control when I wasn't even expecting it.
#6 45 secs lost, ran straight to the other drinks control that wasn't ours.
#7 couldn't see an obvious route, so decided to try something radical and run round the path (the road would have been great, but was OOB). Huge climb at the end. I'm guessing I should have been 4 mins faster by running straight across the hill rather than round.
#9 lost 2 mins without even really knowing how, apart from being very hesitant in finding the flag
#11 lost 90 secs running too slowly an being too hesitant again, approaching the control. Pretty tired now.
#12, 13, 14, 15 losing 15-20 secs per leg now just being tired and careful finding the flags
#16 lost 60 secs wandering well off line and having to correct.
Managed to pick the pace up for #17 and 18, and win the run-in.
