Orienteering race 27:28 [4] 5.5 km (5:00 / km) +165m 4:21 / km

British Relays, Helsington Barrows. M40 Relay, 1st leg.

Somehow I felt much better today, as if yesterday's sluggish performance had given me extra determination to run well. I was first out of the assembly field, and led the race for the first couple of controls up the hill. Nigel Bunn caught me as we reached the first wall crossing at the top of the hill, and then Stevie B came in from a different angle ahead of us at 5 (on a different gaffle). A couple of controls later my gaffle split left to a different wall crossing, and I was on my own again. By 13 we all came back together, and from there I was on the same gaffle as Steve, who was running faster. By the finish I'd lost 30 secs on Steve, but got away from Nigel by 40 secs who had hesitated at a control on a different gaffle.

Overall I was happy to have set Mark off only a little down, and ahead of several teams that we knew would challenge us. Unfortunately Mark mispunched at the gaffling in the final field.

Event: BOC 2012

Orienteering race 1:18:29 [3] 11.0 km (7:08 / km) +515m 5:47 / km

British Champs, Dalegarth, M45L.

Felt ok going to the start, but as soon as I tried running hard uphill, I just felt sluggish. I was walking up hills even early in the course. Probably not fit enough for this terrain, and too tired from working too many hours the last couple of weeks. I guess I should be pleased I at least managed the navigation reasonably well. Just one mistake on the approach to 10, where I lost contact and thought I was right of the line, so swung left as I got into the control area. In fact I was more or less on line, and ended up running away from where I should have been looking. Re-located on 11, which was within 1 minute away, so not too much time loss.

Hoping for better things in the relay tomorrow.
