Orienteering race 1:14:42 intensity: (4:28 @0) + (25 @1) + (7:59 @2) + (35:34 @3) + (26:16 @4) 4.68 mi (15:58 / mi) +85ft 15:41 / mi

First run on the new MLK maps.

Great maps, great terrain, poor execution. Control #5 took the life out of my run. I wasn't as on the map as I thought.... I should have learned from control #3, which I had a slight bobble. It looks like I executed my attackpoint correctly on the N/S trail to 5, but then drifted north of the control and chaos ensued from that point. A little cautious on the way to 6, but navigated well from there, just at a slower pace.

Orienteering race 17:14 intensity: (4:35 @2) + (7:20 @3) + (5:19 @4) 1.32 mi (13:03 / mi) +18ft 12:53 / mi
ahr:137 max:162 shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint.... Another mess. Totally boomed #1 by going down the wrong trail. I didn't even see the first one. I ended up finding #2 navigating back, then returning to #1. #1 was so bad that the entire field beat me (except for one) by over two minutes. #6 and #7 are nothing to write home about either....

Another helping of humble pie for me please.

A little confusing on the last control. Steveng completed a 58M leg in three seconds. Should we call the Canadian Olympic committee and tell them they have a new sprinter?

Alleycat format, but this is O, we are on foot and off road (for the most part). It ain't no alley cat, it's a mountain lion!!!

FS took a previously unmapped area and overlayed some GPS tracks. This was a courier based score-O. Try to clear the course while making your picks and drops. Pick to drops were 102-109, 105-104, and 110-111. There was also a cross town hustle from 109 to 108 where you had to go directly between the points, any other points passed along the way do not receive a visit credit.

I was somewhat familiar with the format, just from reading FS and Toddp's log entries. I knew that the pick/drop kill two birds with one stone is a time saver, but stupidly did not go to 102 first.... Argh.

Order of controls. 107,110 (pick candy corn), 105(pick??? we couldn't find anything (Clark was there also) and found one tennis ball, WTF. kept looking, found another tennis ball.... so we took them and ran off) 104 (drop tennis ball), 111 (drop candy corn), 109 (pick a nickel) and CTH to 108 (drop nickel), road to SF, 101, 102 (pick a penny), 109 (drop penny) 106, 103, 112 to finish. Noone was able to find the tape at 112. Maybe one of the residents took it??? House lights were starting to come on and I saw faces in the windows, so I ran back past all the neighborhood watch signs to the finish. First done and only sweep.

Great night and great fun. Woods were confusing and trails were sometimes hard to follow. Perfect!

Running 5:17 intensity: (14 @0) + (2 @1) + (56 @2) + (1:04 @3) + (1:59 @4) + (1:02 @5) 0.55 mi (9:37 / mi)

Cycling 1:22:47 [2] 16.73 mi (12.1 mph) +519ft
shoes: Sidi Dragon 2

A much needed spin to knock the lactic acid out of my legs. Everything felt great. My riding partner pulled in front of me with 100 yards to go, we collided and I bent the spokes on my brand new wheels.... Argh....

Walking like a normal person now.

Running race (Twin Cities Marathon) 3:22:02 intensity: (8:48 @0) + (7 @1) + (12 @2) + (23:04 @3) + (2:44:28 @4) + (5:23 @5) 26.2 mi (7:43 / mi) +751ft 7:30 / mi

Twin Cities Marathon: My first marathon, maybe my last. I have a new found respect for road runners.

The day was perfect. 50 degrees at the start, clear sky, moderate humidity: perfect day to run or observe. The entire course was lined with people. Way different than orienteering.

The plan was to run with Steve Marberry as we had similar goals. We started a little hot, but kept telling ourselves we would settle in. I don't know that we ever ran our planned pace of 7:24. We went from 7's the first few miles, to 7:10's for countless miles, to 8's for me when I lost Steve at 16. We just slowly drifted apart. I could see him ahead of me for a mile or two, then lost him in the crowd. He went on to finish with a 3:16 or so.

My legs started feeling a little heavy around mile 10, by mile 16 they were really heavy. It was a real slog the last 10 miles. I started worrying about my 3:25 Boston Qualifying time around 22 miles, but created a new goal... run the whole thing, no walking. I accomplished that, and with the huge bank Steve and I had built up, slogged through to the finish.

A huge amount of pain is required for these events. I never felt like I was breathing hard, never felt like my heart was racing, it just felt like I was running in sand for the last 3-4 miles. I am sure I was moving "OK", but the mental picture was of a different scene.

Now to decide whether to actually go to Boston in 18 months....
