Beaufort-Killorglin-Milltown

Yesterday's malaise cleared so much better day on the bike, until I got tired, then it got tough especially as that coincided with a headwind home!

Sun out so was a nice day to be out. The wind sock at Liebherr was showing a southerly wind so knew I'd be in trouble on the way home. Made good time to Killorglin and took a quick tour of the town to take in the newly resurfaced road, not helped by slow cars! Also got stuck in some mass traffic in Milltown which didn't help with the climb out of the village there.

Main plan for the spin was the new road between Killorglin and Milltown, and to take it hard, set a benchmark to beat later in the Summer. Definitely can improve although did have the wind helping today. It didn't help the descent into Milltown though, a few wobbles as a result of it.

Once the climb back to Killarney out of Milltown was done, the hardest part of the spin started even though it was downhill to Listry. The wind was hard and my legs were tired. Really struggled back to Fossa, some ok parts when the wind was less, but anywhere where it was strong I found difficult.

Tired when I got home. Longest spin of the year. I really have no cycling done this year but I suppose my focus has been elsewhere.

Also got new cleats for the shoes when getting the bike fixed yesterday, had noticed my right foot moving a lot when pedalling so went for 0 degree movement. Have had 4.5 degree. Think it will help.

Sun out but a bit chilly, had enough clothes on.

Motivation on the missing list today, and probably has been for the last few days. Thought after last weekend that i'd be on a high considering how it went, maybe i'm just tired. Just went through the motions.

Got the bike back last night after being serviced but didn't fix the noise when pedalling. That annoyed me as I felt it was even louder today. Got it fixed after lunch.

Hopefully i'll be in a better mood tomorrow.

*forgot to mention there were 3 horse drawn Cinderella carriages and a pink stretch hummer limmo outside the cathedral. Communions on!

(rest day)

Got to the cinema this evening! Went to see Avengers: End Game, good film.

Starting to feel a bit better but with collecting bike and Erik this evening had no time to get out in the sun. Lot of time spent in traffic on the way home.

Tralee Town Park
Doing a World Orienteering Day event next Wednesday so decided I’d best check the map, a couple of small changes, but main reason was seeing where I could cable tie controls to!

I’ve never had to fill in so many forms for an event, 2 plus a safety plan! Big increase from 2 years ago when I didn’t need to fill any forms out.

Still not recovered, I’d say I’ll try something on Saturday. I see the Munster League event in Waterford is a week earlier than planned, would like to go but I think it’s too far after last weekend.

(rest day)

Bike not ready today, they’ve had it a week! But not needing it anyway until the weekend. Body suffering after IOC, upper lip is mostly a cold sore, a definite sign of being run down. At least I got some sleep last night.

Going to put on an event in Tralee for World Orienteering Day next week so will get the gear and check the map tomorrow evening, maybe jogging, we’ll see how I feel.

(rest day)

Body tired today and not helped by maybe 2 hours sleep last night. Body wasn’t cooperating and just wouldn’t sleep. I know that the weekend has take something out of me so recovery is important this week.

Very tired tonight so should make sleeping easier although what Liverpool did tonight might night help.

IOC 2019 Relays
Parkanaur
1st :-))))

Really happy with how this race went. Pretty much had a clean race so all good orienteering wise. Also benefited from the easier run yesterday so physically was in good shape. Had the nicer gaffle at the end which meant that I got away from Paul, we'd been together up until 9 apart from the earlier gaffles at 1 and 3, with us punching different controls in front.

On the approach to the last control I saw Killian ahead and after a bit of winding up over the run in yesterday, I tried to close the gap as we approached the last control. Got to within maybe 5 metres of him but he was strong all the way around the run in so didn't get past him. Probably did help me gain a few more seconds to send Marcus off with. So Killian may have unintentionally not helped his club at the end of the race!

Had a look back at the last 10 years of IOC relays, this team has run together 6 times, with 4 wins and 2 silvers.

Note

Plan for the week is recovery. Body better off for no Classic but still 4 days of running with 3 hard races.

Monday - Orienteering
Tuesday - Rest
Wednesday - Bike/Rest
Thursday - Bike
Friday - Run
Saturday - Bike
Sunday - Run

Will see how I feel later in the week to see what I exactly do at the weekend. Don’t think I’m in bike shape for a sportive on Sunday though.

Reflecting on IOC. Very happy with how the weekend went. Beforehand I was wondering about my decision not to run the Classic, skipped it completely at IOC in Waterford but there was an injury concern that weekend, whereas this year it was about saving energy. I'm glad I skipped it this year since it was a long Classic and no regrets.

Didn't really have any expectations regarding the Sprint so a podium place was a bonus. Middle & Relay were the main aim of the weekend. Knew i'd work to do over the winter to get back some shape, didn't think i'd done that, but made the podium and joint 2nd Irish, something to build on towards WOC selection races. Goal for today's relay was to be 1st back and win! Both goals achieved but 1st one aided by a nicer gaffle near the end. With a good weekend of racing there are plenty of positives to move on to the next of the year's goals.
