The Frigid Infliction with DML and Jenny Johnson in a ton of fresh snow.

A new twist, no maps before the start. We started on the Nordic trails and followed glow sticks to where the map handout would be. We did have the BV trail map ahead of time but with the on-race-time map handout we did not take the time to transpose the CPs once we had the topo map with the control locations on it.

The controls on this first leg were dogbone controls meaning you had to get each paired control set before you could continue on to the next set. Teams would only need to collect 3 of the sets to move onto the next leg with the option of picking up the remaining sets on the second ski leg if they wanted.

All of these controls were on trails so the only trick was to pick the most efficient route. We put together a solid route and made it into the TA as the first team to have collected all of them.

7 AM

Snowshoe 1:48:00 [3] 3.5 mi (30:51 / mi)

One benefit of deciding to collect all of the ski leg controls first was that some teams who elected to just pick up the required 3 sets made it out onto the snowshoe leg before us. This made the travel in the deep snow much easier and in most instances made the nav simple.
9 AM

Trek 51:00 [3] 0.8 mi (1:03:46 / mi)

After picking up all of the snowshoe controls we transitioned to our trekking shoes with microspikes for the postholing leg. Just like the snowshoe leg the first 2 controls here also had herd paths to them. About this time we crossed paths with the two-person male team the Mercators and we travelled to the next 2 controls together trading off busting trail.

10 AM

Back country skiing 36:00 [3] 1.4 mi (25:43 / mi)

Having picked up all of the ski controls earlier all we had to do was ski back to the lodge for the last TA. The Mercators still had one set of ski controls to pick up on their way so we put a few minutes on them by the time we hit the TA.

11 AM

Snowshoe 3:45:00 [3] 6.7 mi (33:35 / mi)

We picked up our last map and decided to use our snowshoes for the last leg. We could travel very quickly with our skis even on steep terrain with the skins but based on the location of these controls there seemed to be way too much off-trail travel on sketchy terrain for skis. It was a good choice.

Just after picking up our first control we ran into the Mercators again. They had not picked up any controls yet. We traveled with them through the rest of this leg which helped with the bushwhacking in the deep powder.

Things were going well and I thought there may be a chance for us to clear the course. No quicker did I think this when we encountered a very difficult control (reentrant). We peppered the area for an hour but came up empty on each attack. During our search the two teams split up. Just as we were about to take off without it we ran into the Mercators and they indicated that they had just found it. We had been within 20' of it a number of times prior. The 'reentrant' may look like a reentrant in the summer but in the winter with snow it looks more like a small depression.

We were now under 1 hour to go so we decided to leave a few controls unpunched and head back to the finish. There were two controls on the way which we thought we could collect and still make it to the finish in time. The first was simple. The second one required a significant bushwhack but the feature was in a creek so we felt it might be easy to find. Unfortunately it looks like we overshot the correct creek and walked down a parallel one so we never saw the control. We were now very tight on time so we could not afford the time required to search for it.

We crossed the line with 10 minutes to spare but behind the Mercators. They had managed to pick up an additional control on the way out so we were tied for the number of controls but lost the overall title on time by 2 minutes. We did win the Nationals qualifier as the first co-ed team so it looks like we will be making a trip to NC in Sept. this year.

Another fun event put together by GMARA.
