Mtn Bike (Leg 7 ) 4:37:00 [3] 20.0 mi (4.3 mph)
slept:0.0

To keep more than three teams on the full course Grant informed us that he was pulling the western-most controls from the next bike leg. We still needed to hit the mtn bike park controls and the control near the big pit.

While heading to the mtb bike park Alex found the edge of the road with his back tire and with the pavement wet it slid out, he corrected but in the process ran into the side of Mindy and they both went down in front of me. For a second I thought this might be an issue but they both popped up pretty quickly. Mindy's elbow had taken another hit and it I could see the blood running down her arm as we started back up. Tough as nails.

The mtn bike trails were a lot of fun but this far into the race and with ability to recover from another potential fall lower we just wanted to get them over and get to the next TA.

We made it into town and took the turn up mosquito alley towards Browne Center without incident fortunately.

3 AM

Trek (Leg 8) 1:30:00 [3] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Mafate Speed

We dropped our bikes, had a quick chat with UntamedNE.com and set out for the hike back down the road to the put-in. We passed a number of teams coming up the road from the take out including NYARA-Montebell and Goose AR which helped keep the spirit and pace up. It was much easier making this trip with proper footwear.

5 AM

Kayak (Leg 8) 3:55:00 [3] 16.0 mi (4.1 mph)

We arrived at the TA, portaged the boats to the river and put-in on our way to the finish. Alex took a few minutes to correct his fit in the boat and it made a big difference for him.

Within minutes of leaving the TA everyone was struggling to stay awake and I thought there was a chance we could blow our lead. We addressed the situation with some caffeine and once into the main portion of the river everyone perked up. The sights were new and kept everyone's interest and we had some current to work with. We punched the island control and not much later were joined by Randy's drone then the safety boat with Alexandre Socci in it. He jumped into the water just in front of us to take the pic below. That water was cold!

©AlexandreSocci_UNE2018-7164

We managed to avoid getting too close to the Navy bridge pillars while passing along the north side of the island (or a visit from the gunboat) and then finally saw the finish banners on Kittery Point. We beached the boats, ran up the hill and through the banner winning the 2018 Untamed New England Expedition! We had made this race a focus 18 months earlier when Grant announced the race was coming back and it was awesome to accomplish our goal working so well as a team.

©AlexandreSocci_UNE2018-7002

After the post-race interviews and photos we hung out at the finish in the sun soaking it all in. We congratulated Rootstock on a great race when the arrived and exchanged a few stories over a morning beer. After a few awesome breakfast burritos we sat down and relaxed a little in the patio furniture. With only 40 minutes of sleep during the race it was inevitable that this would happen:

Mtn Bike 6:26:00 [3] 35.0 mi (5.4 mph)
slept:0.7

Panaomeska Passage cont'd

Things seemed to be going well as we rode into the bike drop to pick up one control on foot.

6 AM

Trek (Leg 5B ) 55:00 [3] 4.0 mi (13:45 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 12

We transitioned to trekking and set out for the one control. It looked pretty easy on the map which maybe gave us a false sense of confidence and we ended up wandering around looking for it for an hour. Pat and I both climbed the little spur separately looking for it but it took Alex going up there to actually find it.

Rootstock making it look easy to find this control.

7 AM

Mtn Bike (Leg 5C) 1:01:00 [3] 5.0 mi (4.9 mph)

Back onto the road to ride to the kayak put-in. Way too much traffic on this road in the am.

8 AM

Trek 1:44:00 [3] 5.0 mi (20:48 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 12

River trail trek

We arrived at the TA and started to transition to trekking. Alex nearly became a breakfast for a rescue dog. We identified Pat's bike for the Ride and Tie then took off on foot down the river trail. The two points were not too difficult and we were soon in the town of Dover. We stopped at a store for some water and iced tea for the paddle.
10 AM

Kayak (Leg 6) 5:08:00 [3] 24.0 mi (4.7 mph)

Piscataqua

This was a long transition and I suspect we lost some time to Rootstock here. As soon as we put on the river I knew we were in trouble. We were going to be paddling against the current the entire time. Pat was doing well in his Scorpio but Alex was having a hard time in his solo due to a poor fit. We set up a tow and things ended up pretty even after that. It also helped keep Alex and Mindy awake as we were able to keep up a conversation pretty easily given our close proximity.

Once out into the main portion of the river we were able to use some eddy's to get some assistance down river but the side channel to the take out it was all against the current.

Kayak 1-23

Take-out to TA6, put-in from TA7

3 PM

Trek 1:22:00 [3] 4.0 mi (20:30 / mi)

trek to TA 7

Basically a road run to the TA with our kayak gear. Unfortunately we didn't quite grasp this concept when we left the last TA and ended up trekking in Crocs and paddle shoes. Not ideal. We fed the bugs pretty well along the way as well. Mindy nearly lost her mind actually.
4 PM

Trek (Leg 7) 3:23:00 [3] 6.0 mi (33:50 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Mafate Speed

We transitioned at the Browne Center and I took the chance to change my entire kit for the first time. Such as treat. The next section was the Ride and Tie which forced us to use just one bike to transport the entire team. We figured out a pretty good system and travelled well with it. Unfortunately we screwed up the route to the first control on this section with an incorrect attackpoint. We again wandered around way too much trying to relocate and I expected to run into a team once we finally relocated.

Once back on the map we traveled well and made it to UNH before dark.

7 PM

Orienteering (Leg 7) 3:28:00 [3] 1.5 mi (2:18:40 / mi)
slept:0.15 shoes: Hoka Mafate Speed

Short and Hard o-course

We arrived with a little bit of daylight left but under threatening skies. Alex hit the Long and Hard leg first and the storm hit not long afterwards. It was dark by the time he finished and he mentioned that it was advisable to stick to the trails. By then the storm had mostly passed and I found my course pretty straight forward, handing off to Pat who was on the Long and Easy course and then laid down for some sleep. Rootstock arrived while I was sleeping so we were able to get a confirmation of our lead for only the second time during the race.

I managed to get ready just before Mindy finished crushing the Short and Easy. We set out quickly after that.

Mtn Bike 6:39:00 [3] 42.0 mi (6.3 mph)

Leg 3 cont’d

The last portion of this ride was pretty simple. Just take the old rail trail into town and a few roads to the ski resort.

As we approached the first rail crossing I recognized a second too late that the rails could be slippery with the rain. Before I could get the words out Mindy hit them, her back tire slid out and she landed hard on her right side with her elbow taking the brunt of the blow. She had taken a fall on it earlier and I could tell this one hurt. Fortunately no major damage was done.

6 AM

Mtn Bike 1:56:00 [3] 3.1 mi (1.6 mph)

MTB-O

This would be our first shot at figuring out what our lead was. Pat took the first stint on Long and Hard, Mindy on Short and Easy, Alex on Long and Easy and then finally me on Short and Hard. Rootstock and Checkpoint Zero arrived about an hour behind us.

I had plenty of time to sleep but given it was early am my internal clock wouldn’t allow it. Fortunately we weren’t really feeling the effects of 2 sleepless nights yet.

8 AM

Mtn Bike 3:20:00 [3] 21.0 mi (6.3 mph)

Ride around Lake Winnepasauki then onto another No Outlet road which led to some snowmobile trails and more climbing and eventually a gravel pit near a Boy Scouts camp for our next TA where MHtrailvet and his son were holding things down.

11 AM

Trek 9:25:00 [3] 18.0 mi (31:23 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 12

We were given a new map here with 7 controls which could be picked up in any order. We chose ABC first with the plan of continuing across the ridge trail to DEFG. We hit A pretty easily and were surprised when we didn’t see anyone coming in on the trail as we were heading to it. B and C were a different story. We searched forever for B well below where it was placed and then descended way past the Yellow-Green trail intersection looking for C.
With our confidence a little shaken we decided to pass through the TA again on our way to D rather than our original route. Distance-wise and elevation this was sub-optimal but it offered a better route once past D. As we approached the TA we ran into CP 0 just leaving and Rootstock had not yet arrived so our lead had grown to about 3 hrs which was surprising.

The hike up to D was very steep and involved a bit of boulder hopping through thick bush to get to the ridge line. Once on it we spent some time looking for the control above and below our position ultimately finding it but wasting more time in the process.

Fortunately things started to click again and the next few controls went by quickly just as the sun was setting.

9 PM

Mtn Bike (Leg 5) 2:40:00 [3] 21.0 mi (7.9 mph)

Panaomeska Passage

This was more of the same type of riding as earlier except with more rock gardens on the trail so travel was slow. We overshot the control by the edge of the pond as we were distracted by the intimidating climb which was immediately after it. This required a significant backtrack to correct.

Trek (Leg 1) 7:59:00 [3] 17.0 mi (28:11 / mi) +6700ft 20:31 / mi

Kedakina

It was a somewhat casual morning actually. We walked to the start arch from our accommodations and joked with a few other teams when we walked past our turn. The first leg was going to be a tough one, straight up a double black diamond ski slope. We gathered around the arch for a few words from Grant and then we were off.

We ran right from the gun following the cat trail until it became too steep and then the power hiking began. We stayed on the gas the entire way and reached the summit 33 minutes later as the first team to punch. Everyone was feeling good so we kept up the pace running most of the route along the ridge to the next few controls, all on the slopes. We were allowed to hit CP1-4 without our mandatory gear which allowed a pretty quick pace.

Start-44

We arrived at CP4, picked up our mandatory gear and headed back up to where the real race was to begin.

Untitled

CP5-9 were all bushwhack through typical mountaintop scrub enjoyed in previous Untamed events. We knew what we were in for, accepted it and just plowed through. We briefly ran into Rootstock and Checkpoint Zero on the way to CP6 but our routes diverted soon after. On our road run into CP9 the rain started.

©AlexandreSocci_UNE2018-5307

That's focus right there.

2 PM

Mtn Bike (Leg 2A) 2:54:00 [3] 31.0 mi (10.7 mph) +2645ft

Ancestral Headwaters.
We transitioned in a parking lot, had a few words with Grant then headed out for Evans Knotch. It was a slight uphill ride on paved roads and we kept the pace high. Just as we hit the top the downpour started. We screamed down the other side getting pelted by the rain. It’s perhaps not a great idea to descend at 60 kph with one eye open but we made it safely only overshooting one bend with too much speed.

As luck would have it the rain stopped once we hit the valley and it was a smooth ride into transition.

5 PM

canoe paddle (Leg 2B) 5:04:00 [3] 31.0 mi (6.1 mph)

Ancestral headwaters

Another parking lot TA with Peter Jolles parents and we put on the wandering Saco River. This was a relatively uneventful and enjoyable paddle through the evening into the early night and Alex’s nav was spot on with very little lost time searching for controls.
We found the take-out eventually and portage’d the boats to the TA. The staff was a little surprised to see us this early.

10 PM

Mtn Bike (Leg 3) 1:03:00 [3] 15.0 mi (14.3 mph)

Maze of the Ghost Chiefs

We filled our bladders and bottles, lubed our chains and then set out.
The route was a repeat of the following: paved roads which led to a gravel road which led to a No Outlet road which always had a trail at the end over a col to another paved road on the other side. We struggled with a couple of controls through here. According to the tracker Rootstock came very close to catching us after two consecutive struggles. Things improved once daylight hit and we arrived at the Pancake Paradise soon after.

Untamed New England Expedition with Mindy, Alex and Pat Lussier.

The escalator started Tuesday morning. Gear bin and paddle bag prep, registration then gear/bike drop. Once that was complete we assembled at an auditorium on the UNH campus for a brief introduction then it was on to the school buses for a transfer to the start location which was still a secret. I was hoping for coaches. The final destination was soon revealed as Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel, Maine. This location was also HQ for the first multi-day AR I’d ever done- the 2005 Appalachian Extreme so it was cool to be back.

Maps-19
I wasn't really in that bad of a mood...

Our pre-ordered pizzas were available as soon as we arrived (8pm) and soon after that the course was revealed via an awesome flyover video. With that memory still fresh the maps were handed out and we spent the next 4 hours going over our route. There was so many moving parts to the course. We had been given a brief description of the course ahead of time to aid in bin prep but it did not reveal all of the finer details we would need to pay close attention to. Multiple disciplines within the legs, no bins at certain TAs, writing CP answers in the route book, Focus maps, maps handled out later, etc. It was going to be a complete team effort not to screw it up.

Once through the entire route there was a few adjustments to be made to the gear bins and paddle bag and we finally turned out the lights at 1am with the alarm set for 4:30a to get breakfast ahead of the Captains meeting. I don’t think I slept much.

G-Tour, Parish North

Instructions- Ride to and win G-Tour. If only it was that simple.

A break of three went off right from the start. I knew there would be a chase group so I hung out and on lap 3 it took off and I was able to latch on.
We made steady progress running down the leaders and by lap 6 they started falling apart. We caught the fragments early on lap 6 and the leader just before lap 7. Heading towards lap 8 two guys put in a dig and split the group. I chased but couldn’t re-connect so ended up riding the last 2 laps solo, finishing 7th.
Totally fried now.
