Out and back on the canal with Richie. Swapped boats and paddled his V10 for most of it. I may have flipped in trying to show off twirling my paddle over head.

On Lake Ontario with the Downwind Series paddlers. Looks like Arthurd got the better of the last 2 days for surfing.
Paddled a V12 afterwards. Not as tippy as I thought it would be.

Yeah, I think the battery is going in my chest strap.

Tough time of the year. Everyone is in good shape and no one can get away so the pack just continually attacks and counter attacks the entire time. Lots of sprinting.

ROC event at Powdermill Park

Still feeling a little flat from the race last week. Thought a run in the woods was a good idea until the weather decided to go up to about a million degrees. Totally soaked by the first control. Screwed up leaving 8 by holding the map totally upside down. Strange thing was the terrain seemed to fit for a second. Next error was 13 where I climbed the wrong hill. I need some work.
2 PM

Road Bike 1:27:00 [2] 27.0 mi (18.6 mph)

Intended to ride the Latte Route but about half way thru it I decided to head back early. Cold chills, light headed. I think I've got the plague which is making it though the house.

4 AM

Mtn Bike 1:44:00 [3] 20.0 km (11.5 kph)

Another quick TA and we're back onto a short stretch of a road ride to the next 4x4 trailhead. The rain and darkness made the going a little slower but it was still a fun ride with longer rideable sections. Hansel traveled well with his singlespeed set-up. I nearly made another nav mistake towards the end by turning right instead of left onto the paved road but fortunately caught it before any more damage could be done.

5 AM

canoe paddle 1:04:00 [3] 6.0 km (5.6 kph)
slept:0.0

With quite a buffer between 2nd and 4th place we enjoyed the last paddle back into Bala as the sun was coming up finishing 3rd overall and 2nd place Co-ed.

Thanks to Bob GStix and Bash for putting together a great course as well as all of the volunteers and vetters. I think this course ranks as my most-favorite 24 hour course I've ever raced on. Tons of route choices on the treks all off-trail, excellent paddling and rideable mtn biking off-road where it should be.

Folks who are tired of racing in the same areas of the east coast should give this race a serious look next year. I doubt you'll regret it.

I'm looking forward to the chance of bringing Bob the Beaver to NY next year, at least for a little while ;-) .

Run 10:00 [3] 1.7 km (5:53 / km)
slept:4.0

2012 Wilderness Traverse with Carbon, Goose and Hansel.

Run to boats with paddle gear. Kevlar boats with yokes in an AR, unheard of...wish more RD's could pull it off.
8 AM

canoe paddle 3:54:00 [3] 25.0 km (6.4 kph)

A short carry to the water with the boats and we were off with the lead. Quite a unique area to paddle in with long, narrow lakes separated by small channels and portages that was a lot of fun. Managed one screw up at CP 1 at the end of the second portage and didn't punch the control. Realized the mistake 8 minutes later and turned around paddling against a whole fleet of boats wondering what we were doing. Unfortunately the control wasn't placed yet but we had to travel back to hit the OK button on the spot anyways. Silly mental error on my part.

The remainder of the paddle was spent passing boats in the short stretches of open water between beaver dams. Quite the civil engineers those things. Apologize to anyone we might have nudged along the way.

12 PM

Trek 4:58:00 [3] 25.0 km (11:55 / km)

Fun trek on Canadian Shield which I'd heard so much about. Excellent navigation by Hansel and route finding by Goose made this section go by very quick with Carbon and I just following along trying not to get in the way. Luck was with us as we found a beaver dam to cross on everytime we approached a body of water with the exception of the crossing right after CP 5 (ahead of Snowpants) and the crossing under the rr bridge which we swam.

We arrived at the TA with Snowpants still transitioning which ramped up our urgency.

4 PM

Mtn Bike 4:48:00 [3] 35.0 km (7.3 kph)

Onto the bikes and I'm back on nav. We hammered the short stretch of road to the trailhead for the snowmobile/4x4 trails. The trails were a lot of fun and reminded me of Moab with all of the exposed rock. Just north of Big Chute I made another error and we turned off of the intended route for a 45+ minute boondoggle. I should have taken the time to orient the map and verify the direction rather than just trusting the town sign at the intersection. Stupid.

Within minutes of getting back on the correct route Hansel bent his derailleur into his spokes. We tried to bend his hanger back into place but inevitably ended up turning his bike into a singlespeed. One of the links must have still been bent as within a few miles of the TA the chain broke and we towed him in on the road. This TA was a little longer than the others as we chose to repair the chain again before heading out. I was somewhat surprised that more teams had not passed us and we were still in 5th place.

Despite the setbacks my teammates never seemed to let it bother them and the urgency of travel never dropped which is a testament to their competitive nature.

9 PM

Trek 2:25:00 [3] 6.0 km (24:10 / km)

With the temps dropping the next leg was going to be interesting with 5 swims. Fortunately only the first and second required swimming and the reminder of them could be waded across. Hansel continued to navigate well and we made good time all night moving up to third place.

I woke up around midnight and went out to check out high tide. Its amazing how much the landscape changes. The difference between low and high tide there is around 11 feet.
In the morning it was back to low tide but with no wind and no fog. We had breakfast, broke camp and set out to the north of the island. Once on the west side of North Haven we sighted some islands just past the shipping lane and headed straight for it. Once there we had some food and watched some curious seals surfacing to watch us. From the island we could see the military ship in Rockland Harbor so we paddled straight for it, which seemed to take forever.
Cool trip.

Couldn't miss the chance to do some kayaking while in Maine. I became a MITA.org member in July which entitles you to an on-line and a spiral bound guide detailing the coast of ME with launches, picnic areas and campsites. I picked a faily easy route from Rockland to North Haven which offered 3 different camping options on the east side of the island to camp if our first choice was already occupied.

When we arrived at the launch the early thick fog had lifted slightly and we had about 3 miles of visibility. Not the greatest but it would give us a fair warning of ships passing through the shipping lane we would have to cross to get to the island. Unfortunately we couldn't see our land target about 6 miles out. We set a waypoint on Richie's Garmin, I took a bearing and we set off with the plan of keeping the Owls Head lighthouse in sight behind us and hoping we'd see land before the lighthouse vanished. As luck would have it we sighted a marker buoy about 4 miles out which we paddled to, adjusted our bearing slightly and soon after sighted North Haven to some relief.

We padded between North Haven and Vinalhaven to our first campsite option on Little Thoroghfare Island. As luck would have it it was empty. We unloaded the boats, carried them to high ground and then set up camp and had dinner with a great view of the Deer Isle and the Atlantic.

cj's Coastal Maine Bike Tour- Ellsworth to Camden

My Garmin didn't charge overnight for some reason. Fortunately Richie was able to record the route. Nice route, some of it repeating from day 1. Some nice gravel roads thrown in the mix again.

My first impression of this tour was that it was going to be flat. Having now ridden it I can say there isn't a flat road anywhere. Subtle flat climbs and downhils inland, steep, sharp climbs and descents near the coast. Fun trip.

Wouldn't recommend these routes to someone who is not accustomed to riding in traffic however...

cj's Coastal Maine Bike Tour, day 3

Acadia National Park Loop- Fog and rain early cleared just after our ascent of Cadillac Mtn and it was sunny a beautiful for the remainder of the day. The loop in the park is double wide and one way, perfect for road biking. Plenty of stops to take in the sights. The carriage trails would be a blast to ride on a mtn bike.
