Map distribution at 4:30am, race start 5:00am. We run over a quick route plan, put on ski boots and head to the start.



I can see there's a very wide range of skiing ability and equipment choices in the field.



The first TA is 800' up hill in a maze of trails and we're quickly alone on the route to the top and we arrive the first team there somewhat surprising the TA staff. This is probably because we failed to ski to CP1 along the way (along with about half the field). At this point It's obvious to me our AR logistics skills are very rusty with the winter lay-off.

At the TA we switched to our post-holing gear (trail shoes, gaiters and Katoola cramp-ons) and set out for 2 points relatively close to the TA. We should have brought our crawling gear because that turned out to be the fastest way to travel on/in the chest deep snow.
It took us forever to get CP2 maybe because the clue was "tree".

CP3 was in a re-entrant and much easier to locate. This team looks very happy, probably because they didn't have to crawl on their hands a knees 300m to get to it.



We did this one as an out and back and ran into quite a few teams on our route heading in which was a sidewalk by the time we finally hit the ski trail we attacked from.

Back at the TA we switched to snowshoes and headed out for 4 CP's, 2 off-trail and 2 on-trail. As luck would have it we chose a route opposite of the team behind us and they hit the off-trail points first so we could surf off of their paths for them. The amount of snow hanging in the trees up there was unreal.
We arrived back to the TA first again, quickly changed to our ski gear.

It was a chilly but fun run down the mountain. Because we beat the 10am cut-off we were rewarded with the ability to go for the bonus CP on the way to the Tyrolean. For the climb up to the bonus point we put put our skins on and made quick work of it.
I wish I had a camera for the quick ski back down as I fell 4x before taking my skis off and running down. I'm pretty sure the half-length skins were the issue as I didn't have any issues later on downhills with them off.

We dropped the skis at the next TA and switched to snowshoes for the rest of the CP's which included the inclined Tyrolean traverse which took close 45 minutes for us to clear.





From the traverse it was mostly up hill travel blazing trail and very slow when we couldn't use the downhill trail network and by now it was warming up and we had to start shedding clothes to avoid overheating.
We saved CP12, the ascent of Ricker Mountain (3370') for last and as luck would have we didn't have enough time to pick it up, darn. Not one team even attempted it.

We ended up finishing 2nd in the 3 person co-ed division, doomed by our early miscue. Good to get in an early race to clear our the cobwebs, really enjoyed the course.
