CNYO Rogaine continued-

By the time we arrived at the northern section of the map we realized we needed to add a few controls not on our original route selection. Fortunately we had a decent loop planned just in case. Around 2:30 am the rain started as a light sprinkle at first and then by 4:00 am it was a full on deluge and I had everything in the bag on for warmth. I'm pretty sure we ran more in the second half of the race compared to the first just to stay warm.

We finished up just before 11:00am and the rain was still coming down in sheets.

I think I may need a walker for work tomorrow.

Map distribution at 11 am only allowed for a quick route selection. We didn't think the course was clearable and dropped a few low point value controls along the way. The first half of the race went well with the exception of the electric fence episode where we lost about 15 minutes but met a very nice farmer.

Welcomed a new addition to the fleet. Just when I thought I knew how to paddle I got in (on) this thing and just about dumped it a million times in the first 2 miles. By the turn around I had improved somewhat and can see where it will be much faster than the Glider. Should have used it last weekend.

Richie's boat is 2" narrower still and I took that out for a spin afterwards. Very little forgiveness and I did dump it once. Re-entry isn't too bad on either fortunately. Should be fun.

Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race- Wiarton, Ontario Canada

3:30 am wake-up for breakfast
4:30 am pre-race meeting
5:15 am bus ride to start
6:30 am start at Cabot Lighthouse

All a worthwhile investment for a point-to-point course.

With the words '3, 2, 1, Go!' we were off on bikes following FNJ in his Toyota Matrix. A group of 5 quickly separated and formed a paceline, trading off the lead and working pretty well together on the flat gravel roads. By the mandatory Bruce Trail 1k dismount we had dropped the gentleman on the cross bike (not a wise choice). We remounted and set-up the paceline again with Jason Lane putting in some hard pulls. The road had a lot of twists and turns and we overcooked a few of them requiring some motocross footwork.

We dropped another relay rider on some rolling hills and by the time we it the first single track section it was down to 3. Bill Logie led this section and Jason was having a tough time staying on his wheel so I figured I'd better close the gap before he got away. By the time we exited onto the next gravel road it was just Bill and I.

I led as we heading into the next singletrack section when the trail marking disappeared and I missed the turn. By the time we figured it out Jason and the other relay rider had caught back up. From here we rode in a paceline into TA1.

8 AM

Run 1:41:08 [3] 9.3 mi (10:52 / mi)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2 II

Run along the Bruce Trail thru Lions Head to Barrow Bay. Very technical trail full of rocks, roots, short climbs and decents and tight turns which suits me well. Great views of the Bay right along the edge of the escarpment in some cases.

Passed Lara from Jason's team but didn't see the other relay team runner who had a very good run.

10 AM

Kayak 1:53:40 [3] 10.0 mi (5.3 mph)

When I arrived at TA2 all of the kayaks were lined up along the water and each person's individual gear bag was placed by their boat. In my instance someone even took the time to open my cockpit cover and put my paddle together. What other race does that??

I quickly put my skirt, paddle shoes and PFD on and launched without seeing the second place runner come in so I knew I had a few minute cushion at least.

Once out into the Bay I could see the first relay paddler about 5 minutes ahead of me and caught him by about 25 minutes in. The Bay was like glass which is somewhat unheard of I guess.

Before rounding the point of Cape Dundas I took a look back and could see one boat chasing me. 20 minutes later I looked again and noticed the boat was closer. I stayed on the gas right into TA3 and quickly changed to bike gear, filled my bladder and took off. I glanced out into the water while riding away and recognized Jason as the boat chasing me which was somewhat of a relief given he was a relay racer. No one else was in sight yet.

12 PM

Mtn Bike 1:11:50 [3] 12.0 mi (10.0 mph)

I was hoping the next section was going to be similar to the first bike section with a lot of gravel roads. It wasn't long before a realized that wasn't going to be the case. The course quickly turned off into some technical single track and the travel was significantly slower than earlier.

About half way into this section I made a turn onto a trail called Slim's trail. The flagging was a little older that what we had been seeing but I could find nothing else to go by. This was actually a great trail but not the one I was supposed to be on. I realized this when the trail hit a T intersection and there was no flagging in either direction. I turned around and rode back on the trail but when I ran into Jason coming back at me on the trail I figured I must have been correct intially. I turned around and rode back down the trail again, turned right at the T intersection because it looked like the more traveled direction and it dumped out into a field with flagging tape, phew. Apparently most people took the same route, probably because of the tracks we made. Maybe it will be the course next year, ha!

Through the field and onto a quick road section then onto another gravel road where we ran into FNJ. I mentioned something about the T intersection as I rode by which gave him a somewhat confused look and we kept going into a farm where we hopped a fence and ran into 'Bent who explained the field had 'a few cows and one bull' in it. The field dumped out onto another gravel road where Jason and I pacelined until the next ATV trail section.

The ATV trail was very fast but also littered with rocks and my kidneys felt like I was back on a motocross bike. Jason managed to gap me with about 5k to go on this section and I decided it might be foolish to try to keep up with the relay racers. Its kind of funny how you can rationalize some things based on how you're feeling at the time.

1 PM

Run 36:00 [3] 4.2 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2 II

Rolled into TA4, made a quick transition and headed out on the last run. By the time I was midway up the Urban Road climb I developed a side stitch which significantly limited my ability to run fast. It was fortunate that there wasn't anybody close by as I doubt I could have responded to any addtional effort requirements.

The course continued along the Bruce Trail then out onto a short road section and into the Bluewater Campground, past our tents and on to the finish were I was happy to finish 3rd overall, 1st solo male.

Ang had a great race making the pass for the lead on the last bike section which she held to the finish to win the Female division (6th place overall).

Bash again showed that you can never trust her when she downplays her abilites prior to any event as she won the Female Master race (9th overall).

Overall I thought it was a challenging course which really showed off what the Bruce Penisula has to offer. The community support for this event was over the top and I'm looking forward to racing it again next year.

5:07 in transition time total.

Canoe-O at Genesee Valley Waterways

Teamed with MW in the kevlar racing canoe for a comedy of errors which ended up turning out to be a lot of fun. Here's the route..

Within seconds of starting I managed to drop my map into the water so Michelle gave me her map. She now would have to rely on my desciption of the control location whenever she exited the boat to punch the land controls, perhaps not the wisest move but it worked.

We paddled north on the Genesee River getting 31, 33 and 34 on the east side and then hit 32 on the west on the return. As we jumped in the boat another team in a faster carbon boat passed us after getting 32 on the way out.

They were about 20 seconds ahead by the time we got to 35 under the old railroad bridge and we continued to chase them SE along the Erie Canal to 36 and then back to Red Creek where both teams decided to exit and run to 37 and 38 as an out and back. I was able to chase the other runner down and punched 38 before him. Back to the boat and then back to the river where I decided to again get out and run to 39.

The circle for 39 included part of the river, dark green along the river and a trail on the other side of the dark green. Now looking closer at the map I see there is actually a very small light green patch in the center of it as well, oops. I ran the trail and hit my backstop without any luck of finding it. I figured at that point that it must be right on the shore and only viewable from the water so I ran back to the boat and we paddled the shoreline and came up empty again. The only good news was the fast boat in second had followed us onto the trail, were still searching and had no clue if I had punched or not. When we didn't see 39 a second time from the water we decided to move on and get the next control, hoping to maybe find 39 on the way back.

About 1km away I realized that the finish was just past the next control and we were not on an out and back, error number three. We finished as the first team in knowing that we had potentially left 39 on the course without punching but when we discussed it with the course setter at the finish it became apparent that someone had taken the control as it had originally been placed in an obvious location from the water and the trail (in the light green patch...).

Looking back now the correct way to attack 39 would have been to paddle the length of the shoreline first and if we didn't find it by the backstop then to run the trail back as it was closer to that end then the end where I got out originally. Live and learn.

The fastest way to get all the controls was actually on foot and one team tried it but a miscommunication on the meeting point for the runner and the canoe created a 20 minute scamble for them which allowed us to get past them. I saw another team with radios, really?

Of the 3 events from the Convention this week, this one was by far the most fun.

There was a rumor going around of a 24 canoe rogaine north of Montreal next summer potentially. Sign me up!

GVCC- Parish Hill (part deux)

With the regularly scheduled crit course under construction we were rewarded with another trip to Parish Hill this year. The lack of appreciation was obvious with only 12 riders taking the line.

On lap 2 (6) cat 1 riders got off the front and the rest of us just watched them go, not that we could do anything about it anyway. Laps 3-7 was spent with a teammate and 2 members of another team riding tempo in the hopes that the lead pack would shatter but on lap 8 I noticed it was my teammate who exploded on the hill.

Lap 9 was spent sitting in while the teammates soft pedaled around the course. I knew I could outclimb one of them while the other was crushing me and that's exactly what happened on the last climb as I finished 7th.

Afterwards we discovered one of the breakaway riders had dropped.

Dusk to Dark Score-O
Clockwise order. 1st screw-up heading to the water tower control when I took the wrong trail. Next 6 controls went pretty smooth aside from going head over heels just before 174 and then another screw-up looking for 172. I was so far off I actually caught a glimpse of 177 so I punched it and then found 172 on the way back. Pretty fast run in from there hitting the last 4 controls.

Looks like I managed to get the same number of controls as another gentleman but did it in a shorter amount of time for the win. I'm pretty sure I had a home field advantage.

TJU was 9th and mentioned "that was alot more fun than just running for an hour". Yes it is.
