Travel home.

7 AM

Run 1:07:00 [2] 7.5 mi (8:56 / mi)
slept:8.0

Easy run around the hills near Interlaken with DL and MK.

We took the train to Zurich in the afternoon and in a strange case of serendipity Dave finds 'On Her Magesty's Secret Service' on cable in the hotel room. It just so happens James Bond is sneaking around the Schilthorn lodge.

Dinner in Zurich isn't so bad...

Mtn Bike 2:00:00 [2] 20.0 km (10.0 kph)
slept:8.0

Easy ride around Interlaken with our mtbs before returning them. Ran into DART Nuun as they were just leaving the paddle TA.

Trek 10:11:00 [3] 25.0 km (24:26 / km)
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochists

Trek continued.
After our quick nap we crossed a creek and then headed up 'the most miserable trail ever' as quoted by Dave in a sleep-deprived rant. We climbed for the remainder of the night in foggy conditions finally punching the last CP at the summit. From here wwe descended until we hit the valley floor and then trekked along the road back to the TA.

After some food, a change of clothes and a quick nap we discussed the next biking leg and the condition of Jeff. He had been enduring a bad stomach for the last 24 hours and had only managed to consume about 400 calories without it making a reversal. Ultimately we decided that pulling out of the race was the best option.

12 AM

Mtn Bike 2:00:00 [3] 30.0 km (15.0 kph)
slept:0.25

Ride to bike drop continued-
Paved roads become gravel and we begin pushing up more often before arriving at the bike drop. Silva-Gerber passes up heading in the opposite direction before we arrive indicating that they are over 2 hours ahead of us already. Unbeleivably quick.

2 AM

Trek 1:56:00 [3] 8.0 km (14:30 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2 II

Mountain trek for 3 points. We chose to bring our running shoes with us for this on the bike and it seemed most chose this as well although I did see a few team do it in their bike shoes, ouch.
Lots of climbing straight up. Hard to believe someone can put pavement on hills steeper than Bopple Hill but they did.
4 AM

Mtn Bike 5:38:00 [3] 35.0 km (6.2 kph)
slept:0.25

Back on the bikes after the drop and more climbing and descending over 3 giant spurs. I have a new appreciation for pro cyclists. When we could climb we were travelling at around 6 kph. Had a total blast descending on some of the tiny country, switchbacked roads at close to 65 kph! Views along the way continued to be spectacular as well.

After the first orienteering leg of the prologue I decided to empty my pack of all non-essential items which included the camera so you'll just have to visualize the scenery or refer to Bash's log. :-)
9 AM

Trek 14:20:00 [3] 20.0 km (43:00 / km)
slept:0.25 shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochists

The next trek leg went straight up the mountain and I was happy to be under tree cover with the sun beating down again today. As we approached the edge of the treeline we punched CP 25 at what may be the most scenic CP view I'll ever see.

We continued up following a ski slope under threatening skies. Just as we approached CP 26 the thunder and lightning was right on us. We ditched the trekking poles, I quickly punched the control and we ran to a nearby ski lift for a nice dry place to wait out the rain and hail.

After about 30 minutes of waiting the weather out the skies began to clear and then the sun came out and the entire valley was under a rainbow. The trail headed up through a snow covered saddle and then along the ridgeline to the top of the mountain. More incredible views along the way.

As we punched CP 27 at the top we could see more nasty weather coming so we quickly put our rain gear and headlamps on and headed down.

We descended for again what seemed like forever and once at the valley floor we stopped for a quick nap on the porch of someones hunting cabin, which was the only dry place around.

Raft paddle 50:00 [3] 8.0 km (6:15 / km)
slept:7.0

Prologue-

Event #4- WW rafting

Teams were divided up into 4 groups based on their team number into 1 of 4 disciplines- Run leg 1, Run leg 2, Trotti biking and WW rafting with each discipline taking less than 90 minutes in theory.

With our high bib number we started on the WW rafting first. We were provided wetsuits, booties and helmets and then bused to the paddle start. Paddling was on the Lutschine River which ran straight out of the mtns and was very cold. Only time spent rafting between two bridges after the early technical rapids would count towards our prologue time. I thought we paddled it pretty well.
12 PM

Trotti Bike 20:00 [3] 8.0 km (2:30 / km)

Event #1- Trotti bikes on the Interlaken Airport runway

Each team was divided up into 2 groups who would race 2x 1 lap around the airport runway. Travel on the bikes was actually fast enough that drafting was a benefit and we traded the lead on and off with Quechua the entire time.

May have to add some of this training the next time I head overseas for a race. Soreness in my hamstrings on day 2 from this event was miserable and made climbing more difficult.
2 PM

Trek 1:10:00 [4] 8.0 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2 II

Event #2- Orienteering

A quick loop around the airport runway for a few points then up a nearby hill for a few more. Heat of the day started to take its toll.
4 PM

Trek 1:10:00 [4] 8.0 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2 II

Event #3- Orienteering

Similar loop to #2 but with more elevation and distance.

I think our rotation for the prologue was actually the toughest given the sun and heat of the day for our orienteering legs. 5 out of the 6 teams in this rotation had a DNF/unofficial status at the end of the race. The 6th team actually finished 5th. We saw them later during the bike drop with a teammate vomiting but they were able overcome it for a great finish, congrats.
5 PM

Trek 1:11:00 [3] 8.0 km (8:53 / km)
shoes: Salomon XT Wings 2 II

Run from the airport to the paddle put-in along a mandatory route.
6 PM

Kayak 3:50:00 [3] 20.0 km (5.2 kph)

Paddle in Lake Brienz with sit-on-top kayaks. Strategic placement of the backpack by DL on the kayak as a backrest made these things much more comfortable than in the past. Very scenic and not very rough other than the motorboat wakes.
Somewhat of a concern here was the visual aura I picked up as we took out of the lake which I feared was an onset of a migraine but (2) Aleve seemed to stop the onset.
Quechua was seen sleeping while we transitioned.
10 PM

Mtn Bike 1:30:00 [3] 16.0 km (10.7 kph)

Within meters of leaving the TA we run into a hill too steep to climb and we resort to pushing the bikes which is a common occurrance for the remainder of the race. We quickly connected with about 5 other teams and traded places back and forth over the course of the ride.
We passed through some neat little towns along the way with narrow country roads (think paved cowpaths) and we continued to climb.

Team Untamed New England with Dave Lamb, Melissa Coombes and Jeff Woods.

30,000 calories all divided up, gearbins packed to the gils and ready to finally do something tomorrow.

Went thru registration, picked up the maps and spent the rest of the afternoon going over them. Lots of climbing. As it turned out the course was going right thru the area we traveled through on the train days before, excellent.

Note
slept:9.0

What a difference a day makes. New bunkmates (DART-Nuun) who were just as interested in a good nights sleep as we were yielded some solid rest, just in time.

Picked up the bikes (Stevens Glide-SX full suspension) from Frank and added our lights, repair kits, pedals, mapboards, etc.

In retrospect, I think the best option would be a super light hard tail.

Sunday May 22, 2011 #

Note
slept:6.0

Rotten night of sleep thanks to noisy bunkmates and the disco outside the window, even with earplugs.

Sightseeing tour with DL, CL and the Treehuggers on the Jungfraujoch railway to see the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau up close.

Included a hike out to a distant mountaintop restaurant at 12,000' feet on a glacier. Hiking is fine at this elevation, so is talking. A combination of both results in significant dizziness.

Travel to Interlaken, Switzerland, Europe's playground.

Ran into Bash at the Toronto Airport. She was fortunate to book the direct flight to Zurich, I had to go through Frankfurt, Gernany for an optional checkpoint adding a few hours to my travel time.

Caught up with T_Rex on the flight out of Frankurt into Zurich and we traveled the rest of the way together making it a little easier to carry 150 lbs of gear each thru the airport and thru the train stations.

GVCC- Chili

Break of 3 finally got off the front after 1 lap and I tried to bridge up but waited about 10 seconds too long and couldn't close the gap. RD bridged up to me and the two of us couldn't bridge up either. The pack chased us down a half lap later. The teams without someone in the break helped us chase them for the next 5 laps. I ultimately flamed out and rode the last two laps solo.
Fun night.

Kind of felt bad for the riders in the B group who had a rash of at least 10 flats. Apparently someone dropped tacks on the course. It must have been after the A's rolled through as I don't think any of us had a problem.

Bristol Road Race- NYS Road Race Championships

Pretty tame first and second lap, on the third time up rt 34 no one seemed interested in riding. I rode up it at a controlled effort and rode away from the group, 3 others bridged up and we started working together just as the skies opened up on us. The group caught us just as we hit the bottom of the Egypt climb. They were climbing better than I was and put a gap on me and a few others. We chased hard and the downhill on rte 32 was pretty sketchy during the downpour but we caught the group just as they turned onto rte 64. The effort stayed pretty high the rest of the way in and as we started up rte 34 again the group shattered and it was everyone for themselves. Managed to eek out 9th place.
