Wildcat 100 from Lippman Park outside of Ellenville.

EG wanted a decent training ride in preparation for Leadville and found this race. I jumped on at the last minute and we drove down Friday afternoon.

The race started at 6:45a but since we camped at the start we had plenty of time, it seemed too easy. At the start a bunch guys took off after the first loop KOM climb while we just rode at our 9 hr pace. The race had a 100k option as well and apparently a lot of the front pack was in that category as by the time we started the second loop we were in 5-6 place. The second lap was a 44m loop through a number of trails we had been on during a few of the Longest Day ARs and Natls a few years ago. The trails in Lippman Park are a BLAST!

Lap three was basically a repeat of lap two but with rain. For some reason it seemed to go by much faster however. As we approached mile 90 we caught sight of 3-4 place riding together. We caught them on the back side of the KOM climb and it was obvious they had nothing left to fight with and they let us ride away.

At the finish I paid EG back for letting me win the Segahunda Trail Marathon a few years ago when I spiked my brakes as we crossed the line forcing him into 3rd. Fueled and drank well all day, felt strong even on the the last KOM climb. Tank read empty in the last mile however.

Canadice-Canadaigua Lap with GG.

He hit something in the road at around 10 miles which instantly gave him a front flat that we changed pretty quickly. 5 miles later his rear went flat so we used my spare tube to fix it. At 28 miles he flatted again. Fortunately Ang was around and able to drive out with a few tubes and a pump. GG pinched the first tube while putting it in at which point he gave me his wheel and said 'Here!'. I fixed it, he rode straight home and I continued on our intended route. Probably best as he wasn't feeling very spry and the toughest part of the ride was right around the corner. He may never ride again.

Found the rain while descending into Naples and it continued on and off for the remainder if the ride.

Seward Range in the ADKs with Ang.

Arrived to the trailhead late but caught Ang before the turnoff for Seymour. We summited then headed back down towards Seward. We considered a bushwhack across the saddle to the south side of Seward but the veg looked pretty thick. The trail up Seward is probably the most rugged of the 'trail-less' peaks IMO. From there we went on to Donaldson where Ang took the Calkins Brook Trail down and I hit the optional CP on Emmons before chasing after her with a 56 minute head start. Finally caught her about 0.5 miles from the parking lot.

Black Fly Challenge

Despite the fact that this race has been held for 20 years I've never raced it.
Started in Indian Lake on the roads for the first 5 miles which kept the entire pack together. I sat around 15-20th to stay out of trouble but in contact with the leaders. Once we hit the gravel a group of 15 hit the gas and I quickly found quite a bit of burning in my legs. Realizing it would be tough to hold that for the next 30 miles I backed off and sat on the first chase pack which was always in a state of flux. We'd catch stragglers from the lead group and shed slower riders from our pack at every hill.

Once down to the Moose River Plains the chase group was about 10 guys (including 1 fat bike, and 1 29'er). I noticed they were somewhat taking it easy with some chatter so I hit the gas and tried to get away TT'ing for a few miles but to no avail. In the end the climb back up out of the Plains was tougher than I had expected and I had nothing left at the end to fight with. Finished 22nd. Fun event.

ROC meet at Rotary Sunshine Camp

Interesting area with some nice open woods aside from the rocks which makes running on it a gamble.

Not a great run. Overshot 1 (map needs to show H2O to the west of the control), found 3 before 2, decent to 4, 5 and 6. Twisted my ankle on the way to 7 which seemed to be just somewhere in the woods. Overshot 12 slightly as I was pulled away from the bearing when I saw Rick below me and we found the trail backstop then the control. Took the paths to 13 then no problems the rest of the way in.
