Trek 5:12:00 [3] 13.8 mi (22:37 / mi)
slept:0.0 shoes: Salomon XT Wings 3

From CP14 it’s a 1600’ climb on the AT up to CP15 at the summit of Sugarloaf Mtn and the rain arrived just in time to make it more memorable. We start down towards the finish together but Active Steve’s ankle is limiting his ability to move rapidly. With the resort hotel in sight we catch a glimpse of CPZero in front of us and UNE-Moose takes off after them. UNE- Coyote catches them just before the maze of condo’s, mtn bike and ski trails leading to the finish at the Nordic Center. There’s a little cat and mouse as I’m sure Joe didn’t want us following him in and he lets us run past them while he stops to look at his map. After a few short bushwhacks and condo clearings we end up on the ski trail that takes us in just as CPZero hits it 150m to the east. We charge west towards the finish and arrive just minutes ahead of them to take 2nd place with UNE- Moose taking the win.

2nd Place Team Coyote at Finish

(I'm really not that tall...)

It was a great finish to the race on a tough course and I’d still say that even if CPZero had beat us. It was a ton of fun trading the lead back and forth and we always expected them to be right around the corner which kept the pressure on the whole time.

Thanks to Relentless and Active Steve for joining us in the fun at the last minute and to Grant and his family/crew for putting together a great course!

All pics courtesy of Active Steve.

Working on Maps at Condo

Route selection process

Lemans-style start to the canoes for a paddle down the Kennebec River from the Dead/Kennebec confluence. In the rush Meghan and I launched the boat backwards and had to beach it quickly and swap ends. Finished just behind Rev3 with UNE- Moose, Equilibre, Salomon-Chlorophylle CPZero and a few all-male teams.

12 PM

Trek 3:21:00 [3] 13.0 mi (15:28 / mi)
shoes: Merrell Mountain Masocists III

Trek along portage, snowmobile and jeep trails to CP2, 3 and 4 with paddle, bailer and PFDs. Made a slight mistake right at the beginning and lost about 5 minutes when we ran past the first turn but solid after that.

Moose and Coyote Running Together

On the portage trail, thankfully without canoes this time.

Made it out of the pond CP3 and onto the jeep trail quicker than Equilibre putting us into the lead. CP0 caught up to us while searching for CP4 on the hilltop and we descended down the CP5 practically together.

One Last Look

View descending from CP4.

3 PM

Mtn Bike 2:43:00 [3] 27.0 mi (9.9 mph)

TA at the bike drop where we ditched the paddle gear and picked up all of our food for the rest of the race. Out of transition in first and we pace-lined to the entrance of the single track on the Maine Huts and Trails network. Active Steve and I both had flats early on and CP0 passed us back. Eventually we began the long climb up to the Stratton Hut for the bike drop-Orienteering section (CP9-10) where we arrived in first again.

6 PM

Orienteering 1:12:00 [3] 5.0 mi (14:24 / mi)

Next is a fairly simple trek downhill to CP9-10 on the trail as an out and back which provided a chance to see where everyone was relative to us. There’s a fantastic view of the Carabassett Range from that hut.

7 PM

Mtn Bike 2:58:00 [3] 15.0 mi (5.1 mph)

Back onto the bikes and down to the valley where we hopped onto the rail trail for a fun, fast ride then onto the long gravel road 1200’ climb up to CP12 to a saddle then another long, fast ride into CP13 where we drop our bikes and gear for the last trek to the finish.

Ready to Go

About to descend down to valley from CP8/11.

10 PM

Trek 1:41:00 [3] 2.2 mi (45:54 / mi)

From CP13 it’s a 1300‘ climb up to CP14 at a stream confluence and lose our “trail” and end up bushwhacking most of it wasting about 40 minutes and providing the opportunity for Active Steve to severely twist his ankle. If it were not for his choice to bring his trekking poles and a wrap with him it might have been a long trek back down and a DNF.
As we approached CP14 we saw 4 headlamps heading away and assumed CP0 had retaken the lead.
