Day 1

Bike 1, 30 miles road - Mass start on bikes from the park, controlled pace and closed intersections. No issues surprisingly. Pace stayed steady when the escort dropped but the lead teams picked it up on a long gradual climb to separate from the rest of the pack. Got to the boats in a little under 2 hours.

Paddle 1, 17 miles downriver - Great weather but the river was not moving “really really fast” like Mark promised. Quickly realized that unless this changed our estimates for paddle times would be WAY off. It didn’t. They were.

Challenge - Pretty basic challenge. Huck 4 buckets of water from the river up to an old cistern like the soldiers had to back when the area was an active military fort.

Paddle 2, 13 miles downriver - Phil and Kevin kept this section from getting boring by flipping their canoe going over a weir. Honestly not a bad time for a refreshing dip and their pace seemed to pick up afterwards.

Trek 1, ~4ish miles in town - Super quick loop around Douglas. Got our shots of Wyoming Whiskey, saw a train museum, and an old POW fort then back in the boats.

Paddle 3, 24 miles downriver - This is where the paddling got a little monotonous, but all in all, not bad. Kept fed and hydrated. Saw a bald eagle. Saw a goat too which made Heather crazy happy.

Trek 2, ~4ish miles - Straightforward with a couple steepish climbs but we had poor route choice on this one. Stopped north of A, which was fine, but then stopped in the middle instead of all the way south which would have been a bit shorter. Worried about cliff bands/climb. Found a couch on top of the bluff, great selfie photo op.

Paddle 4, 20 miles “flat” water - This is where things got scratchy. Hit the reservoir as the sun set. Noticeable chop, but not too windy. Then out of (seeming) nowhere the wind hit and things got tricky. With my boat mate 70 lbs lighter than me our boat was a little twitchy but not unbearable. Unfortunately the chop had her testing out the lack of padding in the boat seats. Had to really put our heads down and crank and NOT let the boat get broad in the wind. Happened twice and we “spun out”, almost got flipped once. Phil called the takeout and I burnt all the matches (and the matchbook) to get there only to find it was a campsite. Ouch. Came into the final bay and had to beach to take on more food and water. Eating and drinking was impossible on the open water. Happy Mutant/Main Nerve were enjoying the paddle in the same area at this time. Finally hit the takeout after about an hour of painful driving into the wind. Mile portage uphill to the TA. Super glad to be done with this section, lots of teams got hosed by that wind on the open water including one capsize with lost boat.
