Orienteering 58:19 [3] 5.37 km (10:52 / km) +263m 8:44 / km

Surebridge Challenge green from April, 2007. Around midday, hot at start. 71F later in Crompond. Physical & techincal terrain, little surprise but haven't been to Surebridge Mt area in awhile. Hard on the feet, near end a blood blister distracted. About 7' slower than 6 years ago: undoubtedly warmer, more mountain laurel & blueberry, not very tough today & that much older. So, again, it added up to a Surebridge challenge.

Drove to Lake Welch beach first but too much distance from finish area to start & no good shade for car for dogs. So then back to Tiorati but Arden Valley Rd. was closed. Had considered a short brown later but time spent to eventual start, hard enough run & dogs made the decision to skip easy. Dip in the stream by the old Harriman ski slope & then back to WRP via the Shrub Oak library. Beth stayed at WPR, intent on a 10 mi hike. Some 80 mi of commuting for me to get to Lake Welch beach & back.

At WPR this am

Walking 20:43 intensity: (15:43 @1) + (5:00 @2) 1.23 mi (16:51 / mi) +45m 15:08 / mi

To Group camp start area

Walking 22:08 [1] 1.23 mi (18:00 / mi) +80m 14:58 / mi

Black Rock Forest/Round Pond RR of green Y middle from April, 2011. Cool & breezy, felt energetic. About 4' slower than previous in spite of knowing course tho RC was simple enough. Less than 2' mistakes but not in the same shape I was in 2011 - two years older, too - probably makes a difference. "Punched" too early twice & then again at cp location when it became apparent I had misread map. WP woods are such stoney lonesomes. Quiet at Round Pond on a Sunday pm as well.

Fun to be here with Beth & dogs, like old times. Ignored a few "don't do" signs. Dinner in Highland Falls. Camping at Ward Pound Ridge. Major Sandy destruction of pines at entrance to park - broken in two like so many matchsticks. The hardwoods were barely affected.

Trail/woods running 15:56 [2] 0.85 mi (18:50 / mi) +71m 14:56 / mi

Hopkinton loop, splendid early April day. Didn't see a car for 2.8 mi & only one in 3.8mi. 5mi dirt road on this loop. Tired - seems like a long way to go for any running facility. Feel like I'm running out of a hole - the whole of winter.
Slight bit of knot in left calf near end - chose to ignore...perform-or-else attitude.

Patch-Rollins circuit around 3p - chilly at start but sunny. Not a single car on Patch or Rollins. Back to Hopkinton a few hours later for a CYC dinner.

SPS XC, chilly & windy. XC had a lot of ice & snow patches & muck elsewhere. Ran some 8' pace track laps. Baseball game for entertainment...a lot of youthful competence on display.

Note

Interesting point: Tony Mangan, 55, 'running round the world' since fall, 2010
and Jean Socrates, 69, sailing solo & nonstop round the world (day 164) are about on the same line of longitude - Tony NNW (& heading NNW) of Adelaide & Jean some hundreds of miles south, heading east. Real troopers in their own right.

Trail/woods running 28:00 [2] 2.0 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Winant Hill early am - never would have guessed. Needed to visit 280 Pleasant for blood work & as compensation, woods were waiting at edge of parking. Cold am - socks not good enough for hands. Worked our way round Winant Hill, then to top with sun & paths. Nice to see rims of hills thru trees before leaves. Could see far to the west.

Road/trail 1:17:02 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (57:02 @2) 5.0 mi (15:24 / mi) +164m 13:59 / mi

Not sure where I wanted to go - even considered driving toward town. But in the end, out the door, up Allen to Great Hill area & back. Windy & cold, even heading toward the sun. Found myself on Glacial Boulder Tr & then mostly SM trails which were too snowy/icy so a bunch of dodging which got mentally tiring but no falls. Took a few photos but it hardly looked like spring.

Had a map of Elk Neck SP from 3/28/98 along - dare say a better place to be today. Also a Hogenback Mt map with a green course but no date or other info.
