Walking 18:00 [1] 0.8 mi (22:30 / mi)

Gray DP, blue disappearing. Passed by the Scouts' fireside place - the stack of pallets was gone! Wondered if it had to do with putting it on Saturday's map as a man-made object.

Rt first MTP joint chronically sore but works.

Note

Map, course & route from yesterday. Got it pretty much right by noting splits & doing a lot of moving of gps line...

Probably destined to miss #3 - needed to 'admit' #2 was in wrong place & reassess vs taking bearing & presumed distance from center of circle that was in wrong place. A gaggle of close-together cliffs on a moderately steep hillside with an abundance of thickish green is indeed a hard cp.

gym 35:00 [1]

Gym - weights. Some TI-devotee had left one setting at 270# on triceps press or something similar: put full downward weight on it w/o effect.

Orienteering race 56:50 [3] 5.09 km (11:10 / km) +160m 9:39 / km

CSU Lynn Woods meet, ran Green Y from last fall A meet. Nice Nov day. Would give myself a "C" for the run - sloppy, in & out of map contact. Often more attention called for than I thought was req'd. Think green has gotten greener in past maybe 3 yrs since fieldchecking. I see white pine grow very quickly here at home on Nottingcook map - so maybe the fillin is 20-30% more now at eye level.... Most technical map in Boston area - throw in the green & it can wear ya down! Thanks to Alex, Ed, Brendan, Larry Sara Mae. Will admit to some ridiculous orienteering with 305 track later.

Left late for a one year old's first birthday in Stow - failed to record the chocolate icing-covered face which was very messy!

1. went mostly straight, left wall from where it dropped off spur & still managed to be high tho I'm sure I saw the big bldr
2. after path, went under the 2 large cliffs, then to the rf where I expected to see flag. Nothing doing - some circling, back to w/in sight of large cliffs & back in, then on & saw it farther along - guess the next NNE rf. Surely not in center of circle.
3. straight, careful, right? did not get myself located - saw the path - after enuf flailing around to the N, got on the path went S to the path jct & came to it from there. BP saw it right away from #2, 32 secs on the leg.
4. ok - didn't think it was SE part of knoll but no matter
5. did not see open marsh, came upon big bldr to S of line, reloc by small open marsh SSW of flag (!) & then went to flag - how I got there (to small open marsh across green)....
6. floundered around pt a bit with BP - we were near but did not see
7. beautifully open, went low, got there maybe 20" after BP
8. st, picked my way, not in contact in middle, recalled the approach fm last yr, still not clean in end
9. pretty much st W to path, lost contact but path came up -- managed to run by flag thinking about the photographer last year who caused me to do same...hopeless...
10. attacked fm intersection - again lots of green; tp showed up to replay a year ago
11. followed the paths & right thru parking lot, literally right by Beth & dogs - did not really recog marsh - looked more like open field - was not sure spur or reent
12. similar to last yr - fellow standing there
13. st to cars/field

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

BOS boy scout meet, turned out to be a lot of fun because of attendance & enthusiasm. 13 boy scouts, 5 girl scouts and 5-6 adults on a 20 control score O in 60’. First the usual map & compass orientation, symbol familiarity (no legend), scale/distance & finally a mass start. Surprised at how fast some of the boys ran off - about as fast as BGer’s in ’09, in the same direction. When 2 returned in 41’, I was most impressed. Really rewarding to see how much they enjoyed being outside, in nature, on a fine, slightly chilly day - and more than a few were not sure they’d enjoy what they came to do. Put a flag on a pile of unused/unburned pallets from the jamboree of several weeks ago that some had attended and sat around what they call the amphitheater. Time well spent. Was briefly a BS - and today asked to help with an O merit badge day sometime.

Road/trail 20:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

BHS track, chilly, gray. There were only a few XC kids so it seemed ok - then lots more materialized so I went to the car. Almost as quickly they disappeared. Soon I had the place to myself. 10 times 400m, 100 walk, slowest 2:41 down to 1:44.

Got maps printed for tomorrow. Creating a print & photo pdf due 11/2 as well as getting maps printed stretched computer know-how & patience/tolerance immensely.

Tony Mangan's blog, Oct 26th:

Total as of yesterday = 23,175km for 552 road days. Average = 42km per day. Or 549.23 marathons.

Thursday 25/10/2012. 76km. New road record for one day.

Yesterday. I was 2 years on the run, makes me sound like a criminal!

SloGo bog jog with Z&M. Started with too much on, didn't want to be cold and then too hot in 14'. GOT SNOW back for another 60 day season of deer hunting. Fun & games to look forward to...he shoots my dog(s) and I....

Road/trail 1:13:47 [2] 7.17 mi (10:17 / mi) +200m 9:28 / mi
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Hopkinton loop, gray & somber, bare, beautiful terrain. Took a woods road along fields at start wondering how far it would take me. Generators running at many Hopkinton homes, didn't hear any in Weare. Late sun came out under clouds making for a stark contrast at end. Brought 305 to find it was not charged. Tired/flat.

Went searching for last time (AP personal log search would be most helpful, if possible) - found 7/23, feel I missed a more recent visit. Said: "Look forward to same loop on a fall or winter day. 30mi RT for 7.2 run". And today, a day in limbo, between fall and winter.

PS Halloween and no visits (by 2000hrs) for first time in years...perhaps kids in the neighborhood have grown past...

Orienteering 50:00 [1] 1.5 mi (33:20 / mi)

Walked white course section of map, making a few changes - mostly man-made changes in sandy areas...add/delete knolls. Rain returned & drove us away before finishing.

Usual how-did-I-do-what-I-did-last-year confusion re map scale (1/7500 or 1/5000) & sl rusty OCAD facility. Opted for a Score O for those who come...but they'll need to bring watches & am clueless as to likelihood of kids under 15 wearing a watch.
