Orienteering race 1:09:24 [3] 5.6 km (12:24 / km) +195m 10:33 / km

USOC day 2, B run - good first leg/start; loss of contact on way to #3 for too long but kept on going & regained not 100m from control!; good enough thru #8 but no good plan to 9, losing some 3' - another minute on way to #10 (no excuse) and 30' being too far left on run in - 4.5' at the very end.....Walked up with Kevin Teschendorf not knowing it - duh, too bad as I've spent quite a bit og time with Gale & always wondered what Kevin might be like, look like etc - now I know & wish I'd asked this fellow his name - thought he might have been Canadian or even from Europe.

Superb meet: venue, org, terrain, competition etc. Disappointed with my performance, allowed myself to lose map contact more than I'd have liked. My left hamstring passed muster just fine. Interestingly, the right is now grumbling due to the slip/stretch on a wet log in Saturday's "marsh survey."

Walk to start & a hike at that! Wonderful woods to gaze upon.

Orienteering race 1:19:07 [3] 5.5 km (14:23 / km) +220m 11:59 / km

USOC at Moreau Lake SP - temp just abut perfect in motion. Too bad about the time.... First 4c were good. #5 proved a disaster, unable to relocate after losing contact w/ map amongst marshes. 15-16' error - not sure I've ever managed such on a 600m leg:(. Saw Lori Huberman twice in that vicinity, looking for same I think. After, ok again. 6 to 7 went straight across marsh. Photographer at #8 caused some confusion as to where the control was. #10 got up a bit too early. #11 misread stream jcts (2 of them) but all small potatoes to #5. Should have been low 60's. Way down M60.

Pleased to be w/o L hamstring problem at present. Had some doubt at start as "not right" sensation continues but nothing bothering at present. Slipped on wet log & stretched right ham for some distraction but that does not appear to be amounting to anything.

Great map/terrain/course. Was this all field checked in month of August as legend says...?

Leg 5:

First part along marsh ok - to trail, started up it (right), saw Dave Yee & for some reason turned back along straight route - heading into hardest part of leg & not slow enough to sort things out*. Got into the 5 marsh area & was unable to sort out. Looking now, serenely, early on Lori & I were probably at the cliffs SE end at the southmost marsh, thinking the control should be there. Process of elimination (& southmost w/ mapped bldr in it), sorting out east bounding rockfaces/cliffs should have resulted in a timely relocation...for some, anyway, who have the knack for concentrating when it's truly called for. *Trail portion & dashed line show route that would have worked best for me.

Finch paper company, first view of Glens Falls which proved to be a nice place to spend some time

Walking 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Walk to plateau/start area.

Note

Drive to Glens Falls via Rt. 9, Bennington, 22N - passed thru numerous small towns, most dreary in spite of the lovely colors, green field, woods. Raining hard at times.

Stopped by the cemetery in Bennington where Robert Frost is buried..."tomorrow's wind, if it be wild, should waste them all..."

Trail/woods running 1:15 [2] 3.5 mi (21 / mi)

BBSP early, in the woods before 0700. Needed some O flow after boat immersion. Did a short course, walked for the most part, just pay attention to the map. Fingers distractedly cold. Sun in trees & around Smith Pond (with disappearing mist) was right out of a Robert Frost poem. Lots of green, well-mapped - tough part of BB which has a good bit of variety. Did a 180 for humility, thought Smith Pond was right side up but was not - small print & hand drawn NS lines. Didn't get too far but was confused for a bit as it never occurred to me I was doing a 180. Peace & quiet, saw one man at the end with a walking stick & dogs did not bark - surprised me.

Spent the rest of the day covering boat which arrived in drive around 0930.
Lucky with the wx as tomorrow is a NE gale or so on the coast.

Trail/woods running 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Out back, getting dark. Too much water not enough woods, so a trophic visit. Lots of colorful leaves on the ground. Someone with a remote control ATV toy - thought it was something interesting like a plane but no. Half moon.

Tired, too much rabble rousing in Portsmouth with JAR. Not a great lead up to USOC but that's life.

Road/trail 41:30 intensity: (33:30 @3) + (8:00 @4) 4.1 mi (10:07 / mi)

New Castle streets and came upon New Castle Commons by the harbor/sea.
Lots of quaint homes, close together, so different from here. Found GB's place.

Did 4 sets of two laps at 4 effort which felt good.

Make what you will, New Castle Commons
