Orienteering race 52:19 intensity: (37:19 @3) + (15:00 @4) 5.8 km (9:01 / km) +190m 7:45 / km

Classic distance. Perfect temp at 10am start time. Good run, only missed #2 but that was a bit more than 2' error. Thought I knew where I was but bland hillside w/o a good plan B. Rest was clean, had to keep close contact most of time, not much 'free distance.' Generally run straight & read contours. Saw a 49 & a 50', not sure if any others ahead in addition. John C was about 30" behind. 1st M60, got most of the 50 & 55s in 2nd & 3rd races. Lovely day again. Well-organized meet by BOK. Spent some nice time with Phil incl dinner, Beth too, at a Longhorn steakhouse, 20 ways to serve a steak. One would never guess that the park bordered with a moderately large airport. Then to Wilmington to visit sister & family.

Course & route

The well-organized medical tent w/o much in the way of business

Trail/woods running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

2 days warmup/down.

Orienteering race 42:07 [3] 3.4 km (12:23 / km) +75m 11:09 / km

Middle Distance, Sycamore Scramble. Perfect weather, to bad run did not match. Spent 10' mistake time (maybe 10 yrs since I made such a large mistake, maybe more, hard to do, particularly on a 'trivial' leg) looking for #2, a 90" control. Set compass, felt it was taking me to the left of what I had in sense of direction but it was the compass & it was set.... Ran proscribed distance, a bit up & then down. Saw a control off to left, went to it, not mine, so went back to where I would have been...nothing was working. Guess I saw a car that denoted a road - got on it but it was so far from my expectation that it took some time to figure out where I was (mapped as hardtop vs major road to my erroneous way of thinking). Headed off in correct direction but went by control - to dirt road & back in missing it again & finally saw a control that was indeed mine. Lost some time on #3 because I was pissed/rattled & #8 with sl 'carefree' attitude, otherwise OK. So had some splits for comparison any way. Weather-wise it was like a perfect early April day.

Map/route

Second half

Orienteering race 15:20 [4] 2.1 km (7:18 / km) +69m 6:16 / km

Sprint in pm. Considerably better, only missed one by a small amount when I went to control by another cabin - #1. Felt tired but beat a bunch of the older groups, incl John Campbell who was about 20" back. Some irritation with lack of MN lines at one point.

Note

Flight to Raleigh. Nice, clear day. Saw Portsmouth, IOS, Cape Ann, Marblehead/Salem, Boston, Blue Hills!, LIS, NYC, Chesapeake, Elk Neck SP, Annapolis. 50F @RDU. Spent at least 30' looking at 2009 O maps...humbling, lots of mistakes/carelessness, not to mention MPs.

Walking 14:00 [1] 0.4 mi (34:59 / mi)

Short DP on yesterday's SS tracks in running shoes, going thru some. ...the beauty of fresh snow on the ground but perhaps a mere rationalization...

Road running 55:30 intensity: (40:30 @3) + (15:00 @4) 6.2 mi (8:57 / mi) +120m 8:27 / mi
shoes: NB 993

Fisk-Little Pond, NW wind, warmish, over 40F - slow first half, better second half, downwind & warmed up.

Weightexercise workout 20:00 [1]

Not something I was interested in tonight. Too much "dutifulness" given time available.

Snowshoes 20:00 [1] 0.4 mi (49:59 / mi)

Nice DP with Beth as well. Early golden-yellow sun in white & green treetops, pale blue beyond, gray-brown tree trunks...colors of the early morning.

Snow shovelling 12:00 [1]

Walks, etc. Had about 10".

Road running 54:19 [2] 4.8 mi (11:19 / mi) +40m 11:02 / mi
shoes: NB 993

Slow pavement pound with Diane. Water tower loop, up to touch fence around tower. Some slippery surface, some distance along others' SS tracks. Overcast, hi 20s.

Walking 15:00 [1] 0.4 mi (37:29 / mi)

DP, inspecting burn area. Satisfying to see a tangle of branches gone. Zoe furiously digging for something under snow.

Road running 51:44 [3] 5.5 mi (9:24 / mi)
shoes: NB 993

Luti 5 at noon. Legs about like I expected, lifeless. Groin discomfort retreated. Forecast for snow, most schools closed. Nothing until 2:30p.

Weightexercise workout 25:00 [1]

Almost to myself.

Took a look at the pool, 25 yds it appears. A bit wistful, it's there for the using.

Snow shovelling 20:00 [1]

Shovelled for 20' upon returning home. Not wet but same amount of work I expend at gym. 5-6", looks like winter this eve.

Walking 20:00 [1] 0.6 mi (33:19 / mi)

2 DP's, walked from one big, bare hemlock spot to another as well as on bare, frozen ground in marshy areas. Got to 40F today.

Wood hauling/stacking 40:00 [1]

Alot of pulling, hauling, making a burn pile from an old stash under a big hemlock. Once that got lit, more incentive to haul more, burn more. Pile gradually got smaller. Decent work.

Note

Faraway series; photos from elsewhere, #3:
Solomon Islands sunset, '88

Snow shovelling 12:00 [1]

Walks etc, had about 10".
