Death Race has become an extremely predictable event over the three years I've attempted it, and this year would be no exception. I suck at racing in high temperatures, and true to form, the forecast jumped 5 degrees in the final days from a very promising 22 with sun/cloud to a humidex of 30. Crap...
Long boring storey short is that I can't ever remember suffering so badly through a race. From the first ascent on leg 2 I knew things weren't going to go well, and by mid-way through leg 3 I realized that the aggressive time estimates I had set for myself weren't going to happen. Focus shifted to simply seeing this thing through to score the remaining UTMB points I need to qualify. Was also getting really concerned with the red-brown color of my pee. I've learned since that isn't necessarily a sign of kidney shut-down, but it really freaked me out!
Not the result I was hoping for, but very pleased to have got to the finish even if it meant walking the better part of the last three legs (and subsequently puking after crossing the line - also part of my DR tradition). Much more pleased however that Bash killed the course and her own time estimates on her first attempt despite the heat and muddy conditions. Really would have liked to actually see her cross the finish, but fell asleep in the seat of my rental car with alarm clock in hand (sorry for that Bash!)
