Snowshoeing 2:25:00 [2]

Torrance Barrens New Years Eve winter camping with Browner, Bash, Bent, Coach LD and Goose. Cumulative time between 3 different treks (and taken from Bash's log, as I was having too much fun to notice the time). Great trip with some great people - the awesome pics on Bash's log say it all!

Easy road run, but with the news of Scott Pleban's passing weighing heavily on my mind. For those who didn't know him, Scott was a world-class navigator from the US who a few of us Canadians had the privilege of knowing and racing with.
Along with Leanimal and Andrew C, I raced Untamed NE with Scott in 2009. We met for the first time on-site, but I remember that I liked him immediately, and by the end of it I like to think that we had that unspoken bond that only a multi-day race can forge. We would tease him mercilessly about the yard sale that was his backpack and his horribly antiquated gear, but it certainly didn't hinder him any. In fact, he out-navigated and out-strategized the entire field, earning us the win and a spot in that year's ARWC. The opportunity to go to the World Champs was one I hadn't really expected to experience in my lifetime, and one that I'll never forget.

In 2013, Scott was hit by a car while riding his bike to work, and had been in a coma ever since. Although not proven in court, it was alleged that the driver had been texting at the time.

McDowell Mountain Frenzy in Fountain Hills, AZ. Not sure why it was that I thought a warm and super-sunny race locale would be a good one for me to tackle a 50-miler (given the overwhelming evidence that I all but literally melt in such conditions), but a desert race was on the bucket list, so what the hell....

Granted, the experience of running singletrack with the sun rising over the silhouettes of cacti and mountains in the distance was pretty damn cool. I'd say it was until about 10:30 that things were feeling great. Then...not so much. At 46k the course featured a tortuous 1500ft climb to a 4000ft peak - after that it was essentially game over. I staggered/shuffled through to the finish where another 13km loop waited, and seriously considered whether pulling the plug was the smart thing to do as Browner and Dee drenched me in ice water. Pride overcame logic though, and off I stumbled. By the end things were just about at stage 'Nicaragua' - it took me an hour of lying down in the car and on the bathroom floor before my heart rate finally calmed, but I was eventually able to stand (and miraculously even made it out to dinner!) Bucket list checked - no more high-sun/no-shade distance runs for this wilting flower!

Great trip with great company - huge thanks to Bash, Bent and Dee for inviting us along. Thoroughly enjoyed AZ - I'm pretty sure we'll be back!

trekking 1:15:00 [2]

Browner and I hiked up Camelback Mountain in Pheonix as we settled in for tomorrow's race. A little too busy for my liking, but the views up top were pretty decent. Might have underestimated the climbing - legs will be feeling it on the racecourse!

More Sedona riding fun - this time we followed Dee's route around Cathedral Rock. Nothing but awesome - wish we had another day here, but tomorrow we head back to Pheonix, where we'll meet up with Dee, Bash and Bent for our trail race Saturday.

Fantastic day of riding through Sedona's Dry Creek trail network. Pretty much Disneyland for trail nerds - we did a lousy job of picture-taking, but couldn't really be bothered given the phenomenal conditions. And more of the same in store for tomorrow!

Browner and I shook off the travel cobwebs with a quick hike through the Estrella Mountain Park in Pheonix, before continuing onward to Sedona.
