Final checks with Browner. The rotten ice that covered Rice Lake Saturday was already almost entirely gone by the time we got there this morning. Things are looking good.

course scouting (elapsed/approx) 6:00:00 [3]

Course checks for STT. Normally this would be mainly done by bike, but current conditions made it a run/slog-fest. The snow is disappearing quickly, but the trails are still pretty packed down with an icy crust in many spots. Gorgeous day though, so wasn't complaining...much.

running 55:00 [3]

Easy road run.

First test-ride in my new Hokas - very, very pleased. Bought the Rapa Nui Tarmacs, as the plan is for these to be just for training runs on concrete (which I unfortunately end up doing a lot of). They're not as crazy plush as the other designs, but still very cushy. Felt smooth, fast and nimble - I can't even remember the last time I felt smooth, fast and nimble!

Road run in Milton from the storage locker - ducked into Kelso at Bell School Line for a second but turned right around. That place needs to dry out and get cleaned up. Scowled at some mountain bikers hopping the summit fence.

Far more important though was placing an order for my new Superfly 9.7 Browner ordered hers earlier in the week (yes, we're now THAT couple that rides the same model of bike) so we're going to have a living room full of bikes until we offload our old ones on PinkBike. Anyone had any experience with that site?

racing 14:21:00 [5]

On Wednesday, Katie Z reminded me of the Laura Secord 100k, which I remembered hearing about but had written off due to Badger Mountain. Since I didn't get to race and had been training pretty heavily for a hundred-miler, I decided "why not?" Terrible, terrible decision for two reasons:

1) the conditions were awful - I'd say that at least 20% of the racecourse was submerged in ankle-deep mud. I actually felt very guilty about the mess we were making of the Bruce trail. Obviously no one could have predicted the winter we've had, but I wonder if this race shouldn't have been planned for later in the year.

2) whatever bug I had last week had clearly stuck with me, as I was absolutely bagged within the first 35k. Worst I've ever felt aside from Nicaragua - I've never wanted to quit a race when I didn't absolutely need to as badly as I did this one. So thankful to Browner for keeping me me in it, and happy to have held on to 8th spot by the time it was finally done.

Great to see Bugs in Teeth out there who unfortunately got caught in a pack of runners who got off course and ended up doing even more than 100k. Yet when I saw him on the return route, he looked calm and focused as ever. Looking good BiT! Can't wait to hear the full story of what happened on his log.
