WT with the Gally's and Rob M. Long paddle start was a bit daunting given that we know it to be our weakest discipline, but we surprised ourselves by coming into the TA within striking distance of the lead pack (despite portaging down a waterfall that we were supposed to go around by following flagging tape - flagging tape that I saw and wilfully ignored while trying to chase down Bent and Ursula in the boat ahead of us).

Quick transition and off onto the trek behind TRL, only to watch them dust us within the first few kilometres. Gally nailed the nav with pinpoint precision as usual, but we just didn't seem to be moving as quick as we normally would. This was confirmed when we learned that we had slipped to 6th spot at CP5, and although there was still lots of race left, things just generally felt off. En route to CP6 we learned that the ankle Rob rolled at STT had been giving him issues, but got much worse after a bad fall once we finally hit trail. By the time we reached the CP, there was no question that his race was over.

Mrs. Gally was very much 'on' for this race and had more energy than the rest of us combined - she would have gladly carried us through to the finish. Gally had smacked up his bad knee during the waterfall fiasco, but was willing to press on (note that Gally once pushed through the better part of a 48-hour race on a broken ankle). I felt relatively good, but just before we swam across the river to the TA, I discovered that I was peeing brown again. Apparenlty this is known as 'exercise-induced myoglobinuria,' which isn't overly uncommon or serious, but given that I had done the same at DR two weeks earlier, I played the pee-card and ended our collective suffering. Probably earned myself a new nickname by doing so...awesome.

Good times as always despite the unfortunate outcome - many thanks to Getawaystix and Bash for another great event. No doubt, Beowulf will be back!
