Note

This week will be a technical home camp since many of my common running spots are getting very crowded and I'll be donating blood next week. So it's time to take advantage of the good weather before feeling slow for the next few weeks.

I've been working a good bit on the maps immediately around me---the ones I can run or bike to. The problem is that the new, denser data isn't available for those maps yet. So I've got to make it work with the old data. Not impossible, but once you get used to using the new stuff, going back to low-density data is frustrating.

Really felt the low-density data on 1 since there were a few unmapped hills there that I thought would have been picked up. Things started picking up after that.

I used UsynligO to test it out for GPS punching. It worked really well, generally better than GPS Orienteering. But somebody has to talk with the developer about punching tone. I felt like an 80s jukebox in the forest.

Loads of rocky ground and blueberry up top made things pretty slow going, not unusable, just slow. Then I as got lower more mountain laurel started popping up, but not in overwhelming thickets for the most part. It was mostly in 10m2 to 40m2 patches, which is actually ideal because you can still run, but it adds more technical challenge by cutting down visibility and forcing you to go around.

The error at 7 was a combination of me going off my compass and some over-generalized contours.

22 and 23 were Jagge controls. Had to take them very slowly because in terrain like that you can easily overrun the point and never recover

Note

Back in Scranton, but still working on a few different maps.

McIntyre is looking interesting.

Below is what I have after running it through KP and putting in 30 minutes of drafting with a hillshade and slope image:

The contours are 2.5m, which is obviously not the best for the sides, but is much better up top. There is still a ton left out there to map.

I've also run into something that I observed while I was there.

All these little bumps are 0.5-1m knolls:

And these knolls cover the entire map. Not large enough to be mapped (thankfully) but still extremely confusing if you're looking for another mapped knoll or changes in very vague contours.

6 PM

Running 45:01 [3] 10.0 km (4:30 / km) +178m 4:08 / km
ahr:146 max:167

5x3 minutes fast with 2 minutes slow.

Goal was to go as fast as possible without discomfort and to back off when discomfort arose. Wanted to work on running fast and gliding rather than pushing hard through pain.

Running 1:17:44 [3] 11.38 km (6:50 / km) +334m 5:57 / km
ahr:153 max:173

Real easy exploring McIntyre wild area. Very similar forest to Hickory Run, with softer ground and more hemlock. Looks like a really technical terrain, especially with the leaves out because the contours are even more subtle than at Hickory Run.

Extremely challenging middle terrain. Let's see if I can make a decent map of it.

6 PM

Running 45:01 [3] 9.85 km (4:34 / km) +183m 4:11 / km

Rest week. So less climb and lower volume, but still faster stuff to keep the legs from losing any pop
