Orienteering race 18:14 [4] *** 2.9 km (6:17 / km) +40m 5:53 / km
spiked:9/9c shoes: VJ Falcons 9

Sprint 1 at Fort Washington SP. 2.4km, 40m. Didn’t start my watch, so no track. Staightforward course with route choices on most legs. Mostly a clean run - may have lost a little time on 8 due to route choice. Had some trouble finding the start triangle and seeing lines and circles since there is a lot of green and yellow in most of the area we used. Mostly sunny and in the 70s.

Orienteering race 19:11 intensity: (41 @2) + (4:48 @3) + (10:25 @4) + (3:17 @5) *** 2.56 km (7:30 / km) +39m 6:58 / km
ahr:141 max:164 spiked:19/24c shoes: VJ Falcons 9

Fort Washington SP - Sprint 2. 1.8km, 43m. Four regular sprint controls, 16 micro-O controls, then 4 more regular sprint controls. The regular sprint controls were a bit trickier than Sprint 1 and I lost time on 1 and 3. Small bobbles on several controls in the micro but no disasters - I have lots of room for improvement in this type of O.

Orienteering race 9:04 intensity: (18 @1) + (1:29 @2) + (5:17 @3) + (1:56 @4) + (4 @5) *** 0.72 mi (12:35 / mi) +5m 12:20 / mi

Sprint 3 at Fort Washington SP. 1.0km, 17m. This one was all micro-O except for ~300m out and back from the S/F. Again several small bobbles trying to manage the quick navigation and control code checking. Used SIAir for all three Sprints, which certainly made things quicker, especially in the micro where the SI boxes were on the ground.

Hiking 3:28:45 [2] 5.4 mi (38:40 / mi) +150m 35:35 / mi
ahr:91 max:144

Zion NP - In the Kolob Canyon Area in the Northwest part of the park (and far away from the main Zion Canyon area, so far less crowded). Hiked the Taylor Creek Trail up a canyon to the Double Arch Alcove then a bit farther to a really neat waterfall. I also scrambled a bit to get to the top of the waterfall to get some additional views both up and down the canyon (this may not have been in the best “leave no trace” spirit, but I was far from the first to do it). Sunny, 50s rising into the 60s.

Hiking 40:00 [2] 1.2 mi (33:20 / mi) +40m 30:14 / mi
ahr:97 max:137

Zion NP, Kolob Canyon area - An out and back hike to the Timber Creek Overlook for a spectacular view of Zion and the surrounding area. GPS track is just the way out since I was running out of battery.

Note

Somewhat of a rest day. Drove up to Cedar Breaks National Monument with the intent of hiking but the trails are still snow-covered, in depths measured in feet (elevation is over 10,000 ft). The overlooks and Visitor Center were open, so we did get to view the Cedar Breaks amphitheater (no big deal, having already seen Bryce Canyon). Then drove to Utah’s “Mammoth Cave” which is a substantial lava tube system (apparently 2200 ft worth of passages). We headed 300 - 400 feet down one tunnel, until crawling was going to be required, so turned around. I also explored another tunnel which was not large enough for me to stand in for about 100 ft.

Trail Run 42:39 intensity: (1:17 @2) + (10:52 @3) + (5:06 @4) + (25:24 @5) 3.77 mi (11:19 / mi) +176m 9:53 / mi
ahr:155 max:187 shoes: NB Leadville VS

Bryce Canyon NP - North along the Rim Trail. Pretty decent scenery. ;-) Sunny and in the 50s - warm in the sun, cool in the shade. Elevation is about 8000ft, so I ended up walking most of the upgrades. HR from the GPS is totally bogus (no strap, just the wrist sensor). Doesn’t seem like the climb was as much as stated.
11 AM

Hiking 2:01:55 intensity: (40:41 @0) + (1:14:59 @1) + (5:26 @2) + (48 @3) + (1 @4) 3.99 mi (30:33 / mi) +294m 24:52 / mi
ahr:93 max:142

Bryce Canyon NP - Tower Bridge Trail down into the canyon to a formation reminiscent of London’s Tower Bridge. A less busy trail than yesterday’s hike. Sunny, 70s with some breeze up near the rim. Started and ended at the General Store, actual distance of Tower Bridge Trail is 1.5 miles each way.

Walking 22:31 intensity: (18:02 @0) + (4:29 @1) 0.72 mi (31:16 / mi) +13m 29:34 / mi
ahr:83 max:105

Walking back to the room from the store, stopping on the way to check out the vintage gas station from the late 40s (no longer operational - closed in the 80s) on the National Register of Historic Places. The gas and air pumps looked familiar but the prices did not (21.2 cents/gallon).
4 PM

Hiking 46:38 intensity: (33:12 @0) + (12:30 @1) + (49 @2) + (7 @3) 1.16 mi (40:12 / mi) +81m 33:03 / mi
ahr:82 max:130

Bryce Canyon NP - Mossy Cave Trail. Short hike to a cave (with moss!) and a waterfall.

Hiking 3:07:56 intensity: (2:32:06 @0) + (29:19 @1) + (5:12 @2) + (1:19 @3) 5.33 mi (35:16 / mi) +308m 29:54 / mi
ahr:79 max:134

Bryce Canyon NP - Bryce Amphitheater Traverse, starting at Bryce Point (8300 ft), descending into the canyon, following the northern part of the Peekaboo Loop, and ending at Sunrise Point (8000 ft), ascending on the Queen’s Garden Trail. Took a short side trail to view a hoodoo resembling Queen Victoria when viewed from the proper angle. Trails were well graded and rarely steep (due to switchbacks) but were pretty twisty, working their way among and through various eroded rock things. GPS gave 612m climb but I adjusted it to the value published in the Park brochure.
4 PM

Walking 45:51 intensity: (45:43 @0) + (8 @1) 1.21 mi (37:54 / mi) +51m 33:32 / mi
ahr:68 max:94

Bryce Canyon NP - Bristlecone Loop Trail out at the far end of the Park. ~9000 ft elevation.
8 PM

Walking 43:47 intensity: (26:42 @0) + (15:54 @1) + (1:11 @2) 1.11 mi (39:27 / mi) +42m 35:21 / mi
ahr:84 max:122

Bryce Canyon NP - More wandering around along the rim of the canyon.
