Red course at Sessions Woods. Nice course set by George involving trail runs (or not) followed by 2 or 3 short control picks and then another longish leg with a trail option to more control picks. Lots of fun.

Missed on two controls by not coming off the trail cleanly enough (4 and 7) and then missed on 19 where either I or the map was flaky. Lost 10 - 15 seconds on several of the short legs just being off-line (not taking the time to check the compass closely enough). Took non-trail routes to 11 and 14 and a less than optimal route to 22 (through too much laurel). The road to 11 would've been faster but I think through the woods to 14 was at least as fast as the trail (for me). Probably 6 - 7 minutes of errors.

Warm and muggy, which is less than ideal conditions for me. Heart rate was higher than where it normally is for orienteering and I felt I was walking more than usual. Weight is up a few pounds after two weeks of travel and eating out most of the time.

In New Holland. First road run in quite some time. Felt pretty good but kept the pace easy most of the time. Overcast and 80F but didin't feel hot.

Note

Travel day - back to the East. No travel issues. Hurricane Irene damage minimal - a few minor broken branches and the expected damp basement.

Hiking at Badlands NP. Three short out-and-back hikes on Door, Notch and Window Trails (all from the same parking area). Notch was by far the coolest - up a canyon (including a bit on a log ladder) and out to the edge of a big drop-off/viewpoint. Sunny but not too hot (80's).

Hiking 55:58 [1] 1.01 mi (55:26 / mi) +60m 46:47 / mi

Another hike at Badlands NP. Up the Saddle Pass Trail (a quite steep climb) and then off-trail to the top of a nearby peak to look out over the valley. A bit of exposure on the climb, but nothing too serious. On the way down explored a cave/slot eroded into the hillside. Interesting stuff.

Had visited this area yesterday when it was raining and discovered very quickly that hiking in the Badlands should be done on dry days (clay + water = very clingy mud). Much better today when it was dry and sunny.
