Road bike race 2:45:00 [5] 90.0 km (32.7 kph)
shoes: Scott CR1

A fun day out with all the ironmen and women. We put in a credible effort as a team - 29min swim, 2:45 bike, 1:49 run - 5:05 total - all estimates, results out tomorrow.

Got up at 430am and drove down with the team of Kiersten and Kate. We saw Kate off on the swim starting at 724am and then walked back to the TA where I found my front tyre completely flat. A quick retube, borrowed someone's floor pump luckily, and then as I was putting my tools back in the saddle bag Kate came by and I was off.

The course was very flat and mostly on really good tarmac. A northerly wind made heading out difficult, about 30kph and then about 40kph on the way back. Both speeds down a bit on the second lap when by which time my body had had enough of the prone position and I was sitting up a bit more. Had fun riding past a bunch of tri bikes and helmets, got passed by a bunch too. Did not envy most people who had to jump off the bike and head out on the run. This is a hard sport for sure.

A top venue in and around Mandurah.

Note

As of yesterday I am filling in as the rider on Kiersten's mandurah half ironman team this Sunday!

Just as well I've been riding a bit in the last couple of weeks. Not sure how I'll go for 90k's however, and with no drafting. I'm thinking about a sub 3hr time, 30kph average, is that a good/realistic pace? Any tri advice welcome.

Either we went slower this time or my condition has improved. Hung on fine and completed the full ride. I think Ricky and Ian were somewhere up the front, Shane with me at the back bar his disappearing trick. Some good rotation happening at one point, I kept back, still gaining confidence riding in big groups.

Held on a bit better this week. Bunched up with one or two fast groups on Curtin ave again, but saner speeds I think. Fell off at the Mosman Park hill. Heel is feeling a bit better.
