Adventure Race race (Boundless Mandurah) 2:58:29 [5] 47.38 km (3:46 / km) +309m 3:39 / km
shoes: SC Blur XC

Started at 930, 20 mins after the select paddlers since I didn't bring the ski down due to my back/hip not being ready. Glad I did not bring it down b/c I would have been tempted to do the paddle with what looked like a pleasant out and back along the shore.

Thought I better get the bonus controls on the first run so as not to run too far ahead and that worked great as I finished with Saz and Shane not far behind. Ended up riding out with them, lost Saz after the last control before the TA where she seemed to be thinking about things and not chatting to Shane and I and doubled back to take the short way to the TA. Shane and I kept chatting and continued down the path of doom to the end where Shane went left a bit early and ended up in unmapped suburbia or something, and I luckily found the next path entrance and continued solely north along the river on rideable sandy tracks.

Got to the TA just after Saz and a long time before Shane. Started running with phone and whistle - incorrect - and compass sitting on the phone. Started out and had a number of really weird nav moments in the first 200m until I realized that the phone was totally screwing the compass needle. What made it more desparate was that I could see Ricky and Wil just behind him running towards me. Got to the first control with Ricky and then decided to not look at the map and focus on staying in touch with the tRick. Was surprised to be able to keep him in sight, but eventually lost him and then as luck would have it found him at the next control running about with Leah. This is the one which got moved to the tree. Found it and then followed him out - into a 300m directional error. We eventually caught Leah again and then took a side alley which left her far behind.

I got back to the TA with Ricky transitioning and amazingly was able to catch him again on the bike as that was my mission at that point, but he then took off like a scalded cat just as I managed to get in his slipstream. Doh. Continued to the finish maintaining a bit of the new found intensity. Had fun racing afterall - a rare opportunity to test my mettle with tRicky mid race.

shoes: Inov8 Road-X 233

Bit late to the start b/c I went to Bold Park first, but found Shane and Ann at the start in time. Got the drill from Shane that my time was 4:16 for 6x1km with recovery run back to start. Did the first two laps in 4:25 or so and then my leg/hip/back problem showed up and I cut it back to a jog to finish 5 laps. A cold night - 13 degrees at the end - 2 shirts would be good.

Not looking good for paddling in the Boundless race at the moment - either skipping it or going slow.
