Rogaining race (Mooterdine USD) 11:50:00 [4] 72.0 km (9:52 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

An excellent rogaine with Tooms. Actually had fun. The legs felt fine for most of it. We made up a lot of ground from our original plan and ended up missing only two controls, 21 and 36. However, that was only good enough for 3rd place, 10 points off 2nd. In hind sight going for a sweep would have been the better strategy, but we didn't know the ground would be so fast. (A couple of adjustments to our route would have done it - to pickup 36 with 102-36-75, and to start out with HH-42-20-53-96 - down a corridor we didn't seem to notice at the planning stage).

It felt like a small venue with us running into Ricky and Wil's teams so many times - including much arriving at controls simultaneously. And we must have done almost a third of our course swapping leads with Juffy and Dolf. They looked really strong and we started wondering how we were going to get past them.

At about the 10.5 hr mark we decided to change our course slightly to set ourselves up to get the last remaining control option, 53, if we could hit 41 with about 45 mins left, which meant we had to pick the pace up a bit. Just about here we hit the main bushy patch including an uphill slog through a good bit of parrot bush. But the sun was up now and we continued on fine. We got to 41 with just under the time required and decided to go for it. A good amount of solid running to the end had us coming in with over 10mins to spare.

True to form for the course, we were running to the 2nd last control with Ricky's team behind us in the distance and then caught up with Wil and Shane on the way to our last one. Told them we only dropped 2, and then they started running as well and ended up overtaking us to get in just in front - no wonder, they only dropped two as well.

I thought Tooms and I worked well together and appreciate his excellent nav which saved us a few times. Most enjoyable to have the Ricky train run past us to overshoot 49 and then take about 5 controls to catchup again.
