Rogaining race (Winter 24hr) 13:00:00 [5] 50.0 km (15:36 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Planned exactly what Wil and Ben achieved in winning the rogaine - missing 6 controls in about 103km straightline with about 4960 points. I am really impressed Wil and Ben were able to do that - reminding me of their Kosciusko nationals effort last year.

I found the bush to be a good deal slower to get through than other bush areas with so much fallen timber to walk around. We kept up with the schedule until about 4pm and by 6pm we had to drop a 40 pointer and were about 30mins behind. By 8pm we were an hour behind, but the scheduled pace was going to drop a lot - down to 3kph in the early hours - so I expected us to be able to do a bit of catchup later on. Even so, we didn't think we'd finish the course and was starting to think about dropping more controls. I thought a 90k course would have suited us better, but that puts us out of the top mix, so it's always a bit of a toss up whether to go for it or not.

Fell over early on and pierced the map in the middle which became wet and dissolved all traces of my highlighted route. Luckily we each have a map. Next time I should mark the route in pen as well.

I was impressed that Glenn never took his compass out of his bag all rogaine and pretty much nav'd straight during the day light hours. There after we started walking on bearing more - mostly to get the shortest path - especially after walking a complete circle in about 5mins at one point which was quite entertaining.

I liked what I had packed food and drink wise - keeping to my list there. Clothing was more interesting since it rained pretty solidly for the first 5hrs. The hiking pants were good but a bit cold when wet - tights would be better there. Same for shirt. Also got some bad back rub pretty quickly due to only wearing the loose fitting hiking shirt. A close fitting softer shirt would be better. The new shoes felt great - but next time I'll add my superfeet insoles as I normally do.

Some vague control features added spice to our time. It was a bit frustrating having done so much orienteering lately. But then you get the thrill of finding the control, keeping it fun.

We got to about the 45k mark at 10pm near control 45 when Glenn had to stop due to not feeling well at all - it appears he came down with something. We then pootled home picking up 106 and 32 and back to the HH where we found a sleeping spot for Glenn who continued not feeling well the next day too, and enjoyed the fire and food at 130am. Thanks HH guys for staying up all night!!

I didn't bother checking our scores, but we were given 1990 when we really got 2170 - I wonder if it was our mistake or theirs.
