Harriet Hollister - newly groomed snow, soft but still easily skatable. I keep thinking I've had my last ski of the season but it just keeps on going!

trail running 1:06:00 [3]

Durand - 10% icy - 20% muddy - 5% snow - rest was nice running. Haven't got my garmin working yet, lost the recharge cradle.

Putting out streamers for the Genesee Country Village meet next week. Some ice on the trails but most likely the snow will be gone by the meet.

walking 3:00:00 [2]

Marin Headlands - great hike with lots of bunkers and other military structures left over from when the west coast needed protecting. Went to the light house at the opening to the bay. Stopped by Fisherman's Wharf for a late lunch or clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.

Sunday Mar 23, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

I decided that I had enough running for the weekend although the sprint really was a fun event.

orienteering race 1:03:00 [3] **
spiked:10/10c

Diablo - did brown today since my legs were not totally recovered from yesterday. This was more of a physical challenge rather than a navigational one.

orienteering race 1:56:12 [4] *** 4.1 km (28:20 / km)
spiked:15/17c

Black Diamond - a long middle, lots of steep climb, gnarly trees...the course was tough, I wasn't....oh, I decided at last minute to do the green course just for fun...got lots of it!

walking 2:00:00 [3]

Yosemite - had hoped to ski but they closed down a couple of days before we got there. We had a great hike...went to Vernal Falls - on the Vernal Equinox no less! We hiked up the most popular trail with lots - like hundreds - of stairs then opted to go down the slightly longer trail that turned out to be totally unpopular, only saw 3 other hikers. It didn't have any stairs so was an easy walk down. Saw a bobcat and got lots of pictures of it but you'll need to go to facebook to see the picts since I haven't had any luck posting them on AP.

X country skiing 2:50:00 [3]

Finally got to ski Bear Valley, beautiful day. A little icy in spots where the sun didn't hit...soft but not slushy, where it did. We did most of the trails, some were closed.

Angel's Camp, CA...really enjoying the warm weather. We went for a walk without wearing jackets, hats and mittens.

orienteering race (ski-O long) 1:23:13 [4]

This was truly looooong....lots of hills, fun!

Saturday Mar 15, 2014 #

10 AM

orienteering race (Ski-O middle) 56:40 [3] **
13c

Same start so I was ready! I didn't make any errors other than being a little indecisive on a couple of the more complex legs. Much warmer today and even a little sun. 2nd place meant that the other girls made more mistakes than me.

orienteering race (ski-O sprint) 27:27 [3] **

Trapp Family Lodge - US Ski-O Champs Sot off to a shaky start since I didn't realize that the start triangle was not at the actual start so I wasted about 3 minutes trying to orient my map...finally managed to figure it out. Fortunately/unfortunately everyone else seemed to have the same problem so I wasn't alone. Other than being pokey, I did ok...not real sprinty but I managed a 3rd place. Skiing conditions were great!

Harriet Hollister unfortunately my garmin has been losing rechargability...down to less than an hour today. Beautiful sking, a bit slick in spots but not bad.

Saturday Mar 8, 2014 #

10 AM

X country skiing 1:01:00 [3] 7.12 km (8:34 / km)

Durand...still lots of snow although the south facing slopes took a hit yesterday. No sun today but temps still about 40. I found that the unrolled areas were very good since there was about 2" of soft snow over a firm crust....rolled areas were either soft or icey. Winter carries on...

X country skiing 1:00:24 [3] 7.12 km (8:29 / km)

Durand soft snow but still very good conditions, groomer had been out just before we got there. The sun was very warm, temps just at freezing...snow is not going to last much longer.

orienteering race (long) 1:02:44 [4] *** 5.74 km (10:55 / km)
spiked:7/10c

Long distance...tired, sore hamstring , but at least I managed to get them all. Final day using the rocky part of the map...amazing that they were able to use the same finish for 3 days of competition. Overran the 1st control, drat, but recovered fine until #4 where I was inverting the contours and as a result ran past the control in the reentrant and up the hill on the other side...recovered but was not looking forward to going back up the hill again. At least it wasn't raining.

orienteering race (middle) 39:41 [4] *** 3.27 km (12:07 / km)
spiked:12/14c

Arcozelo, Portugal We ran on the W side of the road today. Much more rock than yesterday, fun course. I made one bad mistake, misreading the number on the 1st control ran away from it, relocated, ran back from a different direction and read it correctly...haven't made that mistake in quite a while.

orienteering race (middle) 34:29 [4] ** 2.98 km (11:35 / km)
spiked:11/11c

Arcozelo da Serra, Portugal a kind of disappointing course that avoided most of the rocky terrain, I think because of the concern that us oldsters would find the rocky parts treacherous. It was a running course with rather straight forward legs. The only rock part were #9 & #10 and both were close to trails. Good thing is that I didn't skip any controls...came in 9th but couldn't have run any faster. Hamstring insertion (or is it origin) is giving me some pain...hate when this happens. Banquet tonight - woo hoo!

orienteering race 51:26 [4] *** 4.41 km (11:40 / km)
spiked:12/16c

POM Day 1 Vila Nova de Tazem Lots of trails and complexity made for fast running...went fine until I skipped #7 then couldn't make the map look right going to #8 duh! I didn't even realize it til I got to the finish....which I should have since I've done this before, missed the control that was on the same line and just slid my thumb ahead. Part of it was that there were lots of people around so it was hard for me to stay focused. I also hadn't realized until last night that I had a 7500 map, another thing to think about although that really isn't any excuse. This takes the pressure off for the 4 day total.
