Adventure Race 3:38:25 [4] 45.0 km (4:51 / km)
Joined up with MattJ for our first race together with the plan of just enjoying it and not worrying to much about the result. Matt got us off to a flyer with an effort that reminded me of our days controlling the half back line at Hammersly Footy Club. I think he dived between 3 other wouldbe 'peg getters' to get a red and a blue peg from the first pile.
Paddle
Headed to 2 with the plan of getting to 5 and seeing how we felt before deciding on the optional CP's. Got passed by a very speedy Wally just before 2 and then kept him in sight along with Ameko till 4. Matt felt good enough to get the optional CP's although he was regretting the decision a bit on the way back. I had a slippery moment leaving 8 which may or may not captured on Dolf's boat cam. Paddled back pretty hard with Matt showing a lot of grit with a recent lack of paddling. Chose to leave out 6 and turned from 1 not far behind Wally coming back from 6.
Run
After getting the options on the paddle we decided to just get the compulsory CP's on the run. Went 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 with only a slight hesitation on the way to 14. Matt ran well and we were pretty quick through here.
Bike
Followed Juffy out of transition which looked like it was going to make this leg easy nav wise (thanks Juffy). Juffy was kind enough to make sure his bike held together through the tricky section before giving in to it between 24 and 25. Offered him my chain breaker as we saw his rear derailleur scatter across the paddock. He seemed to say 'no thats it i'm out' so we carried on. Good to see he toughed it out.
After that I had to read the map more closely which made it more interesting. Came to Garvey Park a bit to far west and had to back track to find the bridge for 26. 27 fine then stuffed up around 28 and had to backtrack from Pickering park after contemplating swimming around to the control but opted to ride back around instead. Overshot 29 so wasted a few minutes there. Noticed by back starting to get sore during the last few km's.
Run
As I got of the bike back stiffened up and the first few controls were pretty uncomfortable. Then jarred it stepping down a hole near 3. Made the mistake of sharing the nav on this leg which resulted in losing flow and contact with the map. Really should have just let Matt nav the whole thing as I think he would have done it better. Started to fatigue in the last few as tRicky came past. Cramped in my hammy twice in the last 3 controls and Matt was steaming ahead by now.
Not sure how many teams were in our group but nice to finally get on a podium! 3rd was a good result for us. Made the mistake of not eating anything during the race and drinking only about 900ml. Spent the rest of the day with a nasty headache and super fatigued so will make more effort to drink more next time.
Had a great time and the course was great. Rarely felt like we were in an urban area and I definitely enjoyed this format more so than last years events.
Only thing I thought odd was no legend on the map. Thanks again to the volunteers and well done to John and Ian looking forward to the next one.
