Orienteering 1:42:00 [1]

Picking up my O-course from Wednesday because SSG Schlegel wanted to use it over the weekend. didnt find a car to get up the hill, so I planned to do it Tuesday at the suggestion of Reiter, but my roommate's plebe has 0 motivation to do PT. I saw him and asked if he worked out today, and he just asked if there was enough time to some before Plebe Mando. I looked at the clock and there was an hour left. I told him he'd be able to figure something out. 5 minutes later he was in PTs and knocked on my door. I decided to run him up there and make him hold the map after we got to my first point. He took me to two points before I told him to run back and get showered for plebe mando, and then I continued on without him. It got darker faster than I had hoped, so I was out there with very limited light and had to just feel my way around to my points since I couldn't read the map and I couldnt see farther than 30 yards. I did jump a deer on the hill though, and I plan on setting up a tree stand in the vicinity. Overall I was successful at finding the points and collecting them up, but most people would have declared me as crazy and aborted the collection process about half way through.

Note

Hudson Highlander-

I plan on shaking Thierry's hand... I am pretty pumped to get to meet the Lance Armstrong of Orienteering. I also plan on following him to the first control, if not farther.

When I get tired of running after Thierry and I decide to pass him up, then Luehrmann and I will tag team the rest of it. I really hope he's ready to do some woods running because I plan on bush-wacking as much as possible. I'll push him, and he'll slow me down a touch to keep my navigation better.

Any other followers are appreciated.

Orienteering race 1:06:00 [4] *** 6.65 km (9:55 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons

A fun run through the woods until I got dumb at point 8 and at points 16/17. I felt like I couldnt call myself an orienteer because I was that frustrated.

Run (Woods run) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Hedgehog GTX XCR

Map with whited out areas to show the newbies how much they relied on their map, how fast they can run in the woods, how the woods affect them, that they need to follow their compass better, that they need to be better at distance estimation, and how much they remember of terrain that they've run on.

It would have been wreckless to implement this somewhere they havent been unless there were PERFECT catching features. I feel like making them RUN in the woods today was a good thing, not only to show them that they dont have to stick to trails to run fast, but also to get them to get better at micro-route choices. Kids who run a minute to a minute and a half faster than I in the 2 mile were commenting that I could "run fast" in the woods and that it didnt seem like it was hard for me. It's not, i just feel like too many people try and run the woods like they run a trail and they slow down when the ground isnt open. For the most part, nobody had any huge problems that prevented them from completing the course, and most were able to identify errors they made. hopefully they can start seing a pattern and then fix them.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Hedgehog GTX XCR

Setting up for tomorrow's course and taking down the line-O,
most were satisfied with the Line-O but it wasnt a complete loop so I feel that: A-it was too short, and B-that many of the people weren't as concerned with accuracy as I stressed that they should be. I wanted them to really walk between the boulders that squeezed in around the line, and know which boulder they were seeing and how it was mapped, but many didnt care to put that much effort into it, so overall I feel like there wasnt enough training value for the amount of effort it required. Not that there was no training value, but rather that it wasnt as enlightening as I would have hoped for the newbies. Most completed it and came back up to redoubt 4 within 50 min of departure. that means that they either didnt make any mistakes, or made them and didnt pay attention enough to notice and fix themselves by getting back on track.
