Completed 8 more streets in Lower Milford Twp. Mid 40s and mostly cloudy; breeze from the NW.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Back to Deanna's class. Today's theme was grounding, and since there were only three of us we utilized the long wall of the room.

Note

Another travel day, this time to home. Got a few extra steps in Atlanta airport between terminals, but not much else. Watched Everything Everywhere All at Once on the flight from El Paso to Atlanta. Suspense/Action/Comedy rolled into one movie.

Note

Dinner at Bosque Brewing in LC. They didn't have the hazy IPA described on the website so I had a dark lager (Dark Times in the Shire) which was fine, with jackfruit tacos.

11 AM

Hiking (flat trail) 19:31 intensity: (12:20 @0) + (5:32 @1) + (1:28 @2) + (11 @3) 0.75 km (26:06 / km)
ahr:82 max:124 shoes: 2019 Altra LP4.0 9 rspb

White Sands National Park explorations. Temps in upper 60s to 70F with varying levels of breeze/wind.

Last time I visited here it was in May and in the mid-90s. More pleasant now, but more wind too. Dunes are on the move!

12 PM

Hiking (dunes) 46:59 intensity: (20:40 @0) + (18:17 @1) + (5:21 @2) + (1:48 @3) + (52 @4) + (1 @5) 1.85 km (25:24 / km)
ahr:90 max:152 shoes: 2019 Altra LP4.0 9 rspb

Dune life trail. Hard to follow the trail some places as dunes have shifted...

1 PM

Hiking (boardwalk above sand) 31:47 intensity: (20:37 @0) + (8:57 @1) + (1:09 @2) + (1:04 @3) 0.77 km (41:13 / km)
ahr:78 max:122 shoes: 2019 Altra LP4.0 9 rspb

No desert life visible but we did see tracks of perhaps a kangaroo rat.

While we were out on the boardwalk we heard and saw a jet, then heard a sonic boom, and later had a fairly low pass buzz from a jet...exciting, but camera was too slow to get any pics.

2 PM

Hiking (dunes) 18:44 intensity: (1:11 @0) + (11:57 @1) + (4:46 @2) + (50 @3) 0.9 km (20:45 / km)
ahr:98 max:126 shoes: 2019 Altra LP4.0 9 rspb

Walking in the white stuff.

Note

Another travel day; Ft Stockton to Las Cruces. Dinner tonight at Mexican restaurant La Posta in Old Mesilla (one-time Mexican town next door) where I'd eaten once before with friends and had the best sopapillas (like a popover, for dessert). We had them again and they did not disappoint. I had a quesadilla.

Had an unusual dream early this morning (I typically don't remember dream contents), where I was at a restaurant with a family with children who had stuffed animals that were animated (think cartoon versions) and could walk and talk, and went walking for a bit with them (the stuffies) on a trail, before they had to leave. I continued on the trail and was sitting at one point, in a chair/bench/wheelchair?, when two bobcats approached me. Apparently I tried to yell to chase the bobcats away because I yelled in real life and woke both of us up.

9 AM

Hiking 9:41 intensity: (3:09 @0) + (6:12 @1) + (20 @2) 0.36 km (27:12 / km) +1m 26:45 / km
ahr:86 max:108 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Rio Grande overlook near Rio Grande Village. Upper 70s and sunny.

10 AM

Hiking 1:17:40 [1] 1.6 mi (48:32 / mi) +50m 44:15 / mi
ahr:89 max:144 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Into Boquillas Canyon from parking. The GPS signal bounced around the canyon and reported 4.1km and 649m of climb. We did have a couple of hairy scrambles to cross rocky spurs. Trail described as 1.4mi round trip. You do have to climb across a spur to start but then it's mostly flat except for the optional rocky spurs.

Low 80s and buggy for the first part (until we entered the canyon). Mexican hucksters (one on horseback on the US side of the river) had displays of handmade knickknacks along the trail; illegal to purchase per signs in RG Village.

2 PM

Hiking 28:38 intensity: (7:29 @0) + (17:02 @1) + (2:48 @2) + (1:19 @3) 0.98 km (29:20 / km) +1m 29:08 / km
ahr:92 max:133 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Chihuahua Desert Nature Trail from Dugout Wells trailhead. Informational signs about some of the vegetation in the area, and explaining the windmill that remained from a settlement there (the rancher who dug out the wells) near the little oasis. Saw some birds in the shrubs as we drove in but they disappeared for our walk. Low 80s, sunny.

We did see, and I photographed, a white flower on a plant with lots of spines on everything but the flower blossom. I'm pretty sure it's a White Prickly Poppy.

7 PM

Note

Dinners Saturday and Sunday were in the dining room at Chisos Lodge (overlooking the "Window," a V shaped cleft between two mountains looking west-ish). Sunsets can be spectacular. The only internet connection in the Basin was near this building, so it was a popular place. They had Coors, Blue Moon, and a very tasty Hazy IPA on tap (Tall City's Haze Y'All).

Monday we left BBNP via the east entrance. We looked for someplace to eat in Marathon, but didn't find much worth pursuing so drove an additional 52 miles to Fort Stockton where we're staying tonight. A search on Google mentioned a little place with 4.9 stars from 130 reviews, so we checked it out. Not much on the menu besides burgers and chicken, but the burgers we had were very good...worth the stop (V's Kitchen).

8 PM

Note

Fort Stockton also has a roadrunner statue, but it's made from standard statue material, not recycled items. Still cute. :-)

9 AM

Hiking 21:45 intensity: (6:17 @0) + (10:31 @1) + (3:52 @2) + (58 @3) + (7 @4) 0.76 km (28:33 / km) +3m 28:05 / km
ahr:92 max:136 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

From Chisos basin (~5400' above sea level, where we are staying in the lodge) in Big Basin National Park to the Window viewpoint and back, before heading out for other hikes. Pleasant temperatures already, though it was supposed to get into the 80s or near 90 in lower elevations today.

11 AM

Hiking 1:25:17 intensity: (12:42 @0) + (1:08:51 @1) + (3:44 @2) 4.7 km (18:09 / km) +64m 16:59 / km
ahr:91 max:111 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Hiked around Lone Mountain, an igneous outcrop near Panther Junction in BBNP. In the upper 70s and partly to mostly sunny. We were first into the lot today, but there were 4 other cars when we left.

Saw animals on the ridge rhat we thought were mountain goats, but the ranger at the visitor center said they were Barbary sheep, escapees from some hunting ranch.

Big Bend bluebonnets and a cactus wren at the PJVC.

1 PM

Hiking 1:12:39 intensity: (12:51 @0) + (23:34 @1) + (29:17 @2) + (6:10 @3) + (41 @4) + (6 @5) 3.34 km (21:45 / km) +140m 17:59 / km
ahr:101 max:157 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Lost Mine Trail in the Chisos mountains to the saddle/overlook (I could see the top of Emory Peak) and back. Remembered my hiking pole, which I used on a few of the larger steps.

Views down Juniper Canyon, and to the Rio Grande beyond. Could see just the top of Emory Mtn through a gap between Casa Grande and Toll Mtn from where we turned around. Windy at the turnaround point, but not that much on the rest of the hike. Missed about 120m and a bit of time when I forgot to restart my watch (not knowing it had stopped).

4 PM

Hiking 1:08:55 intensity: (19:31 @0) + (37:32 @1) + (10:37 @2) + (56 @3) + (19 @4) 3.29 km (20:58 / km) +88m 18:30 / km
ahr:92 max:138 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Basin Loop trail back in Chisos Basin, from our room. Temps probably in low 80s but there was a nice breeze to keep us comfortable. More nice views.
