Yoga 50:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (10:00 @2)

Deanna's class; focusing on "agni" to warm us up. We did fire breath and some flow patterns that used many muscles.

My triceps, sore from catching myself on several falls this past weekend, were shaking and tired; I took it easy on them and didn't attempt any pushups from our one-legged planks. ;-)

Sweetwater Creek SP, Red trail along creek to New Manchester Mill ruins, then continued down to White Trail connector where we headed back N. Bushwhacked to Green trail up to Jacks Hill area where we connected with a different section of the White trail and back to visitors center.

The red trail had signs warning of moderate to difficult sections, and there was some scrambling and eroded areas to traverse, so I was glad I had worn both O shoes (albeit really old ones) and my ankle brace. Hiking pole might have been handy too.

We were surprised to see a permanent course marker (A) near a very large cliff along the creek trail, but not so surprised when we saw J, K, L, and M later on along the White trail. ;-)

GNC Brown Y day 2 at Lake Franklin, 3.6 km, 120m climb. Low 40s to start but it warmed up to mid 50s by the time awards started.

My day began auspiciously with good scores on rhe morning puzzles I play, so I had hope for success today and mostly delivered. One small bobble on #7 where I stayed too low rounding the spur until I figured out I needed to be higher (also, forgot to take a split here). One stop en route to 4 to let a youngster know where he was.

One fall on the way to the Go control; small bruise on my right hand.

Nice day; ended up 1st of the old folks, though there was an M-Brown who finished in less than an hour. Finished first of three in F70; awards for non Jr Nat'ls were coffee mugs with the event logo. I technically won two but am only taking home one (Glen got one for Friday, which had separate awards from the weekend).

Note

Went back to Beacon Brewery for dinner; had the black IPA again, and a veggie fried rice bowl (along with the potstickers app again); Glen added pork to his.

7 PM

Note

For now, results.

To start of GNC day 2's classic course from parking at Lake Franklin with part road, part powerline cut. Upper 30s but plenty of sun today; some breeze.

Orienteering race (Brown Y) 1:16:48 intensity: (41 @1) + (23:32 @2) + (31:24 @3) + (20:15 @4) + (56 @5) *** 5.16 km (14:53 / km) +92m 13:40 / km

Brown Y course on Lake Franklin map (area west and northwest of the lake), 4.0 km, 90m climb, 12c; 1:7500 map.

Good routes and navigation until after I left #4, then the wheels came off when I (having only gone about half the distance to the control) mentally made an extra-large wide reentrant be the one past my control...I wasn't pace counting and did not regularly check my compass, so I just compounded the error. No good places to relocate from and even when I tried I saw the wide reentrant as the much smaller one beyond my control.

Finally forced myself to head NW and hit the trail I originally wanted to attack from. 15-16 minutes lost on that one leg. Rich Parker, who started 16 minutes behind me, was in to 5 before I got there but then I got ahead again on the way to 6 where I stayed on the trail until the bend to the east while he left it earlier; then I stayed ahead, finishing just 8 minutes behind his total time (so I had gained back 8 minutes).

Bob Bullions was first on the course again in 53:30, with Rich Parker second and Bruce Z third. That was all of the M80s. I was next, a minute+ behind Bruce and 4 minutes ahead of Ruth, then Kathy B, Allmuth, and Patty Royal; Linda Smith was overtime and Roddy Wares DNS.

Note

Dinner at Your Pie in LaGrange, a wood-fired "design your own pizza" place (similar to the Mod Pizza chain). They had a nice selection of draft beers as well.

8 PM

Note

Two slight falls today (one over a "baby head" rock --wut?, and the other after one foot went into an old small tree root hole (that Kathy B and I had discussed before heading out today)). Noting in case I have triceps soreness tomorrow.

Brown Y course at the Georgia Navigator Cup 2023, 2.8 km, 55m climb nominal, 1:7500 map. About 40 and cloudy all day, with some breeze in open areas, but none to speak of in the woods. Lake Delano map portion of FDR State Park, parking below/west of the dam of Lake Delano and starting <500m up the road from there.

Bobbled the first control by a lot, confused by the mapping of the trails and also areas adjacent to earth banks. The earth bank I attacked from, at the south end of a dam for a pond, was one too far south, but in my defense there was no pond on the map, just a potentially marshy clearing with 4 green dots (as for open with scattered trees, which it did not have). I should have attacked off the middle of the three earth banks, but I don't remember seeing the first/northern-most one. Very confusing; I lost at least 5 minutes there. Unsure on the way to 2 because I started looking in the ditch valley partway but with no controls there kept going and found it. No problems from there on in.

Woods were nice and open with few downed trees to cross (all the big ones were mapped and avoidable or used as control sites), and not much in the way of underbrush or vines. Managed to keep my feet dry on stream crossings.

Not much competition on Brown Y...only 10 of us, I think, with the F70+ and M80+. Bob Bullions was first on the course and beat me by 12(!) minutes but all others were over an hour.

Talked to a few people before the course to hear stories of how they fared as the Hampton Inn was still without power last we heard (I'm writing at a bit before 8PM Friday night). One couple we know who took shelter from the storm on the drive from Atlanta to LaGrange ended up in a motel at the Alabama border. Our Home 2 Suites room is very nice...lots pf countertop space to spread out. We saw where tornadoes had passed by and torn up trees and done some damage to buildings but roads were passable. There are places on town where they'll be working to clean this up for days.

Dinner at Beacon Brewery on the south side of town...beer (limited styles) is very good and the food tasted great. Lots of Asian-inspired dishes. We shared a pot stickers appetizer, then I had two sides (mac and cheese and teriyaki snap peas) as my dinner; Glen had General Tso fried rice. Most of the sandwiches seemed heavy on sriracha and/or jalapeƱo (not my thing)....

Note

Made it to Atlanta (plane delayed due to Atlanta weather, but otherwise not a bad flight). Then we saw a discussion post from Mike Minium about La Grange Hampton not having power due to some small tornadoes in the area. We're not staying there...but had a reservation at another Hilton property close by. I called them and they had just regained power, but they let me cancel for tonight and we found a place closer to Atlanta. Hope the people from the area, as well as the O venues, are okay!
