DVOA meet at Rutgers Eco Preserve; our first time here. Courses set by Patrick Shannon (thanks!), and the Brown was appropriate to the terrain though I didn't particularly like the use of #8 coming from the SE because we had to go down a 2' embankment through scratchy briars to cross the stream then cross right back over to head to the Go control. 3.7km, 50m climb, 9 controls. 1:7500/2.5m map was welcome, and the climb was probably overcounted. About 38 F with some sun peeking out occasionally but a northwesterly breeze that was uncomfortable for the first few controls and the run in from Go.
Did fine from 2-3, 4-5-6, and 7-8.
Left the trail too early for #1 (wasn't pace counting along the muddy road, and didn't notice the heavier trail at my intended trail junction) at an unmapped trail to the south and corrected through the woods, so a bit slower than I would have been had I stayed on the trail longer.
For #4, my plan was to take the E-W trail until I could cut over to the N-S trail, but I cut over too early and then navigated off the wrong trail for awhile before correcting (good leg!). To 5 Rob W caught up and passed me, though I took a better line across the first big stream and was leading as we approached #6*. Then, instead of staying on the wide-right trail to the parking area for #7 I tried to go straighter, but got caught in some green slash and had to back out...lost time to Rob again, though I caught up around #8. Then, trying to find a different way to cross the stream out of 8 I waded it knee deep, and ran on the wrong trail to a bend before realizing I had to go SE.
So really, if we return, I should better heed the advice to stay on trails as long as possible. Late winter/early spring would be a good time of year to be here, too, after more of the briars have collapsed.
*A bit of circle cutting on the control circle for 6 would have helped; the circle obscured the extra stream we needed to cross and the trail to the west.
