Note

Oh well...looks like our relay leg 3 runner forgot to download after finishing his run at Patapsco. Results C'est la vie.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow....

Note

Thanks to QOC and all the workers for this great event, and Amy especially for working results and baking treats! The woods weren't too thick/pricker-y though more downed trees than I needed, and the course was interesting. I hope I didn't let down DVOA too much with my poor race in Brown. The sprint was fun; thanks to Sam for organizing teams for us!

Brown course at Patapsco State Park, parking adjacent to the CCBC campus, and heading into the woods from the large field to the SW of the parking area with giant solar panels. 3.4 km with 120m climb, on a 1:10000/5m map; course by Ted Good. Temps were in the low 40s all day; the sun made it feel nicer than it could have felt, though there was a bit of a breeze in the field.

Not a bad run except for small errors at 1 and 3, and a large error to #9. AP gives me almost 15 minutes of error. Sloppy to #1; too far down the hill to #3 (Glen passed me at #2); and I must have been on the wrong bearing to #9. I people ahead to help me on 5, 6, and 7.

1 PM

Orienteering race (Sprint) 20:18 intensity: (23 @2) + (9:46 @3) + (23 @4) + (9:46 @5) *** 2.26 km (8:59 / km) +18m 8:39 / km

Had an hour after I finished Brown and when I was up for Leg 1 of the club relay. I ate a brownie and half a banana between the races. Still sunny but not much warmer than earlier. I wore my new DVOA top for the first time at this race.

Mid-Atlantics Sprint Relay on the campus of CCBC, 1:4000, 2.5m contours; 1.9km, 33m climb. I was in the first mass start, for 9 point teams on Leg 1/Short, with Julie Keim and Ernie Schubert who I had within sight for the first few controls. I interpreted #5 as the south corner of the paved area but *inside* the wall/cliff, and got ahead of Julie (for awhile) when she went for the outside edge and had to come back uphill to it. She had almost caught me again by the Go control after which there was a 150m run in with a small hill to climb along the way, and she powered by me to the finish.

I tagged off to Bob Agosta, who tagged off to Steve Pepe, an M40 who hasn't been orienteering for as long. My only "error" was to #6 where I didn't immediately read it as past the bottom of the stairs, and descended the stairs rather than a slightly faster route along the hillside to get to the bottom. When results are posted I'll add in which place we finished.

One might quibble about the readability of the "overhangs/canopies" supposedly mapped with white and tan angled lines...the tan doesn't appear on most of them. The triangles indicating that you can get under are also tiny and difficult to interpret, but that might just be my 69-year-old eyes.

Note

Forgot to note that in the neighborhood across the way, one yard had a moose decoration similar to the one shown here in their yard. Fun! Quite a few homes in this area decorate for Christmas (a fact a put to good use the year I followed the Coast Mtn Trail Running winter scavenger hunt activity to find a multitude of Christmas decorations).

2 PM

Walking 55:40 intensity: (22 @0) + (47:55 @1) + (7:23 @2) 5.04 km (11:02 / km) +20m 10:50 / km

Went out walking between rain storms (neighborhood across the street, park, and our neighborhood). Mid-upper 50s but breezy.

In our community, I saw a reddish-breasted bird that was bigger than a bluebird (common nearby) or robin (not many here)...when it flew I could tell by the silhouette that it was a kestrel! (We and other bird-loving neighbors have also regularly seen Coopers hawks and red-tailed hawks, and possibly sharp shinned hawks around. First kestrel I've noticed.)

With Glen around the community. Low to mid 40s as the sun was setting; felt colder than yesterday (maybe due to the incoming humidity?).
