Node hunting in Salisbury Twp (City Strides). Light rain showers and about 48° but I was dressed for it.

CS says I didn't get all of some roads but they're labeled "private drive, no trespassing" so I went as far as seemed reasonable, although I may have missed a short one; will need to return to investigate. (I'll edit them in OSM Editor)

DVOA Charlestown Township Park Sprint 1, 2.6 km, 50m climb, 1:3000/2.5m map (and course) by Sam Kolins. It's a small park, yes, but with lots of options for creating an interesting course, and that's what Sam did.

About 54 and raining. The rain was coming down pretty heavy when I arrived and got ready. Julie said she was out in the worst of it. Kathy M arrived just after I did and started a bit later. They were both faster than me overall on both, but I was only about 23 sec behind Julie on the second sprint.

I finished respectably in the middle of the pack on this sprint, slightly ahead of Rob Wilkinson, but behind Bruce Z who passed me on the long leg from 13-14 and stayed ahead.

Orienteering race (Sprint 2) 18:39 intensity: (15 @2) + (1:02 @3) + (9:50 @4) + (7:32 @5) ** 1.73 km (10:47 / km) +13m 10:24 / km

After the first sprint, my Garmin told me that my recovery time was 46 hours (because I generally don't run/hit zone 5). Hah! I got out on the second sprint while I was still warmed up. Still raining, but not as hard as earlier; it was barely drizzling by the time I finished.

Sprint 2 had epunch boxes lying on the ground with pin flags nearby to mark locations. Sam could have confused people better if he'd used regular flags at *all* locations, but this way he only has to dry 20 of them, not 38. 1.6 km, 35m climb. All but three control locations were trees (the better to fit pin flags behind); the others were a thicket, a bridge, and the corner of a sandy area (volleyball court near the parking lit and pavilions).

The bridge control over the creek was what cost me some seconds, as I thought it was at the far end and crossed the bridge but didn't look closely at the clue until then...ah! it was under the bridge. So I looked under from the NW side but it was placed more towards the opposite side and I couldn't bend down enough (without crawling) to reach so I backed out and went around the end of the bridge to the other side. I found out later than Sam had had to move it slightly (I saw him near there while on the 1st sprint) as the creek that crosses the park had risen since he had placed it, and the flag and control were under a few inches of water when earlier runners were there! Also lost a few seconds going to #2 when I miscounted the trees along the path.

Having Air punch made it easier as I didn't have to bend over too far for most to register.

And this distance counts towards my mileage challenge for October (52.4, raising funds for the D&L Trail).

Thanks to Sam, Lena, and Nina for the great outing! And to all the control collectors, bless you for hanging around in this weather.

Note

Forgot to wear my HR strap, so numbers for HR above are suspect. I was able to jog most of the level and downhill parts and power walked the rest. Felt fine doing so, and my right knee (which usually complains when I jog) also feels fine.

Yoga 50:00 [2]

Continuation of this week's focus on focused gaze, or drishti. Held some standing poses longer than usual; my legs were shaking.

Black River Sanctuary in Salisbury Twp. near Franko Park. Glen and I tried to go here a few days ago (or last week?) but got rained out. Since tomorrow will be a washout I wanted to get out today. Legs a bit tired from yoga.

Lots of rocks underfoot and boulders on the hillsides. I did use my hiking pole here. Low 60s and overcast, as the remnants of Hurricane Ian approach the mid-Atlantic states.

I printed out Glen's track from his Aug 29 visit on an Open Topo background to have contours. Took one trail different from him on the way back from the pond. The first part of it had trail markers labeling it as the Spicebush Swallowtail Trail. Still working on trail building.

Added note: I took splits at trail junctions.

Hiked at Eagle Rock (while grands are at school and mom is busy tutoring) and looked for, and found, the other geocache I didn't have time to find last week (before the rain started). Gorgeous day, about 60 and sunny (though not in the woods). Used an orienteering map from 2018 for trails.

I could see NYC clearly today; last week it was fogged out. Saw some hen-of-the-woods (Google lens ID'd it as chicken of the woods) fungus on one tree on along a side trail I took...impressive and colorful!

Forgot my ankle brace, so took my hiking pole along just in case but didn't need it. Rt knee was more sore than left ankle, surprisingly.
