DVOA Brown course starting from Camp Daddy Allen in Hickory Run SP where the club held a training weekend (which we did not participate in). 3.6 km straight line; 105m climb, 1:7500 map (thank you!!)
Overcast when we got up this morning, and low 70s when we started, probably still in the 70s and cloudy when we left around 1pm. Humid, though!
The Brown course had 17 pre-registrants, and I was sitting around 6th when we left, about 12 min behind Rob W, but ahead of several others. The map area we used was more light/med green than white, with some smaller areas of dark green (mt laurel and mature rhododendron); and the areas mapped as white are starting to fill in with light green (beech saplings). Thickish vegetation is not my friend, so I had difficulties on controls where that came more into play. Missed on 2, 4, 9 (same as #2!), and 11. Lost the most time on #4.
Went to #1 just fine, then a bit left (east) to #2 but then found it okay. Good to #3.
There was a nice trail that I used partway to #4 (the longest leg), but I left it too early and then lost track of where I was. Thought I was attacking okay but when I got near where I thought the feature was and didn't see it but saw others, I wandered a bit. Came across another control not on my course, figured out what that could be, and relocated (successfully!) from there.
Feature-hopped to #5, then 6 and 7 were nice short legs. Used features to get to a saddle east of #8 and went in from there; others had more difficulty finding the form-line hill.
Then I thought I was going due north to #9, but ended up to the right (higher) and had trouble getting the map/terrain to match, but eventually saw a flag downhill from me. Was it my #2/9, or my #3 which I could relocate from? Yay...it was #2/9! This general area has tripped me up in the past (the terrain isn't mapped as I expect and I don't adapt quickly enough).
The uphill through laurel to the big field and from there to the road and trails near #10 went fine. Then I decided to try to go mostly straight to #11 using a stream bed but it's much more overgrown (with laurel) than depicted (which I should have remembered from previous visits here) and it took me longer than it should have to get to the trail before the control. Finally made it through and found the hilltop, then it was a downhill finish. Would have been better to use the trail west of #10 and swing wide left, then come in off the huge building.
Sweated throughout, and my hat was soaked when I was done though it never got out of the 70s. Good thing there wasn't much rock underfoot in the area, or much to trip you up; just lots of saplings and laurel to get through.
Note: Start and Finish boxes were very close to one another, not as depicted on the GPS track.

Hiked with Glen at a slow walk, due to temp at 90F (but lower dewpoint than it might have been, and mostly shaded trails) at Manderfield Preserve south of Trumbauersville that Glen discovered/ran at earlier this week. Rocky trails, so I took my hiking pole which helped during some rocky ups and downs.
Went past Turtle Rock and a spring, and saw a few cardinal flowers near a creekbed that I'm sure is more full of water in spring. This preserve would be interesting to visit in, say, March or April. Thankful to the family that chose to preserve this area.
