Note

Route gadget animations for my races:
Friday
Saturday
Sunday

There are places where my track diverges from the trails/roads, but I was on trails; I think the maps aren't precisely geo-referenced (mid-2000s vintage).

9 AM

Orienteering race (Pig Brown A) 50:19 intensity: (1:21 @2) + (17:07 @3) + (27:57 @4) + (3:54 @5) *** 4.11 km (12:14 / km) +26m 11:51 / km
ahr:137 max:164 spiked:9/10c shoes: 2022 VJ Falcon 6.5. GA

Flying Pig 24, Day 3 Classic on East Fork SP Indian Mound map (starting from and ending near the beach parking area); 1:10000, 5m. Brown A was 3.5km (no climb calculated), course by Mike Minium (who's also the meet director, as usual).

40s again; started cloudy though the sun came out by the time I finished. Breeze down by the lake was in our faces as we ran from the Go control to finish. Clothing drop was at the corner of the parking area and then we had an uphill hike to the callup line below the trail on which the start actual took place.

Another good "run" for me with virtually no mistakes though I didn't take the most direct route to #8, hitting the trail it was on 20-25m east of the control.

Janet F had started 12 minutes ahead and had beaten me yesterday. However, as I approached my second control, so did Janet! She'd lost her advantage; I never got a chance to ask her where she'd miscalculated. I had her in sight through #5 because I had chosen a quicker route to it from #4, but then she pulled away on the road run to #6 and clawed back at least some of her lost time. I finished ahead in the end, though, for combined two-day times (and overall for the weekend)...

Sharon was her normal strong self and won the Brown A course (though I got her by a few seconds on two of the legs), with me in second after Allen Newman didn't do as well today.

Note

Had dinner the last couple nights from a place we stumbled on called Bite, a farm to table place east of Milford. First night we showed up without a reservation, but they said "we can prepare food for you to take out in 10 minutes" so we did. Made a reservation for last night, and ate with Janet and David from EMPO.

Walking warm up/down (To start) 14:03 intensity: (8 @0) + (6:31 @1) + (7:24 @2) 1.25 km (11:13 / km)
ahr:103 max:118 shoes: 2022 VJ Falcon 6.5. GA

We got to the meet site early enough to snag a space in the lot near finish, so it wasn't as far as we feared to the start. We did have to visit the adjacent parking lot for bathrooms, though there were also portajohns at the start when you finally got there. Low 40s but the sun was doing its best to warm things up.

Orienteering race (Pig Brown A) 48:47 intensity: (15 @1) + (3:53 @2) + (27:03 @3) + (16:19 @4) + (1:17 @5) *** 3.18 km (15:19 / km) +30m 14:38 / km

Flying Pig day 2, classic, 3.0 km, 75m climb, by Matt Robbins (also on download). East Fork SP Afton-Elklick map, 1:10000, 5m

Controls were pretty straightforward and I took pretty safe routes. Temp was a little warmer than yesterday, upper 40s with some thin clouds making it so the sun couldn't warm us as much as it might have.

Took the straight route from 6-7 (vs taking the trail around because someone on the same course [Allen Newman] was just ahead of me at #6 and getting to the trail out of the start that we needed to cross, and he turned towards the trail around for the second half of the leg). As I approached where the trail curved back towards me before the control I saw Allen running on the trail.

8-9, I hit the stream below the dam (NE of control) too far N and dillydallied deciding which way to go...saw others in the area. Decided to loop around S and then had an easy approach.

The run in from the last control was flat, muddy, and boggy if you ran in the center of the trail...slow!

Janet F had a great run today, beating the field by about 3 minutes. I think I'm 4th on Brown A, 32 seconds behind Sharon who's in 2nd, and 15 behind Allen in third.

Flying Pig 24, all in East Fork SP east of Cincinnati and Milford, OH.

"Middle" course designed by Shin Shimuzu (on the long side for a middle, but it had short legs like a middle); the shorter of the two Brown courses offered; 2.8 km, 110m climb. East Fork SP, Slabcamp Run map, 1:10000, 5m

We stayed overnight in Cambridge, OH, last night and drove the rest of the way this morning; our starts were between 3:30 and 4. We hit intermittent snow showers on the drive this morning (crossed through a line of thunderstorms yesterday afternoon...that was exciting), but those were done after we were south of Columbus. Temperature never got much above 41 or 42F.

No problems with navigation, really; after the first three controls and experience with how steep those reentrants and gullies were, I contoured around any others I had to deal with.

Note

Stepped outside to refill bird feeders. Though the thermometer read 26F there was wind whistling through the screens and it felt brutal out there!
